Hi Brendan,
So ; who's arguing with you ? I think I said it sounded workable, they answered all my questions in their press release and it has worked in Saratoga in similar fashion in the past. So ; yeah I'm agreeing with you, based on a 1 yr. program, BUT WITH ONE CAVEAT. Any 1 yr. experimental program in partnership with the casino industry leaves me feeling just a bit underwhelmed that's all. Either the DRF or Bloodhorse article, can't remember which at the moment, mentioned that handle & attendance would need to double under this plan in order for it to work. I've already factored in the cost savings you mentioned so I'm also with you on that point. I just hope somebody is looking at the much larger picture 'cause I don't for one second believe the casino's are in this for more than 1 year if need be the case. They've temporarily put a halt to lobbying for trackside slots ( as mentioned in the article ) and that's what they were after in the 1st. place. I'm with you ; I hope NJ racing one day soon will be self sufficient and all these cost cuts will at the very least give us a better picture if it's possible. Hey ; I'm a nj breeder too but it's time for last second bailouts & 1 yr experiments to stop 'cause we can't continue to hold our collective breath every few years. So I'm with you here too as I hope this actually works 'cause I honestly believe the train stops here one way or the other. Good luck to us all !

The reason they are calling this plan experimental is because they have to prove the increase in handle and cost savings of this new plan. If it goes as hoped it will be continued and the experimental label will be dropped.
Here's two facts to consider:
1.The 12 races alone should generate a minimum of a 33% because each racing day will offer 33% more races.
2.The higher quality races will generate a significant increase in handle both on and off track on your best racing days---ie the summer months on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, plus your holiday Mondays----Memorial day, fourth of july and labor day.
Both of these facts seem plausible to me and if so then
this plan may not be that experimental. Everyone is hoping these changes fix some basic problems. I am very optimistic.
No, its not my editorial, its from DRF.
From the article today:
"State officials stressed that the plan has been adopted on a one-year experimental basis, in large part because approximately $20 million of the purse outlay is being provided by casinos in Atlantic City under an agreement that expires at the end of this year."
http://www.drf.com/news/article/111309.html
Im from NJ. I raced there for 20 years. Id love to see it work, but it cant and wont. There will be 30 and 40 entries for the low level races each day; people won't be able to even get into a race for a month or more. Im not sure its even been proven that people gamble on higher quality horses more than lesser. I think its more likely they gamble on fuller fields, as they offer better opportunity to make money.
The owners of the 5k horses now will be competing with 20K horses that people bring in just to run for those astronomical purses. Claiming will be crazy. People are already buying horses at Gulfstream for 20-30K to compete for the lower claiming prices.
Next year (if there is a next year) will be a disaster.
Here's the heart & soul of the matter plain and simple. 140 days between Monmouth & Meadowlands was unaffordable & apparently wasteful. 50 days was absurd. 71 days was not so much an agreement between all parties but a State Gov't edict of take it or leave it and you had better make it work ! The deal with the casino's is clearly a one time event which ends this current year. If they fill a 12 race card with 2 - 3 restricted for jersey breds every day the backup may not be as bad as one might expect, although bad enough, and you had better have your horse ready to go from day one. Midway through the 1st. meet ending in September add up your handle & attendance, subtract the proportionate casino money you won't get in 2011, figure in your cost savings with the exclusion of Meadowlands etc. and get your bottom line which had better be black ink. In the meantime observe how many concession stands pull down the shutters for the last time 'cause that's your 1st. clue. I just fail to see how this can't adversely affect the Jersey breeding program in the near term at the very minimum. Just too much long term uncertainty given a 6 month window. On the other hand, and I admit I'm grasping, it gives the new Gov. an additional 6 months to come up with plan B if needed which could revive the whole slots thing since the casino agreement only lasts til November and then lobbying can begin anew. Fasten your seatbelts & put your trays in the upright position !
Bring 'em back tired ; but bring 'em back sound !
Just one final question, from me anyway, regarding this whole matter and I put it out there perhaps being a bit naive or even ill informed so willing to listen to thoughts. With all that's going on and assuming The Meadowlands is now permanently out of the picture for thoroughbreds, along with the State of N. J. having exercised their apparent final option, wouldn't you think an outfit with expertise such as Penn Gaming ( to name one ) isn't at least looking at Monmouth as a possible acquisition provided they can get the Gov. of N. J. on board to allow on track slots ? I mean if slots were the answer, and would fill state coffers, I imagine they'd have been installed already despite protests from A.C. casino's. Here the Gov. would rid himself of a PR nightmare, the NJSEA would eliminate a part of their portfolio they clearly can't manage, some prime real estate could be further constructively developed albeit with a private owner, the A.C. casino's would probably get their just dessert's, and the racing fans / owners / breeders have much to gain. So the A.C. casino's sue the State of N. J. and Penn Gaming ... let them ... it's not like they haven't had their opportunities to be a partner. Or, conversely, does the State stand to lose more tax revenue than it would gain with such an idea ? Like I said ; perhaps a bit naive but appreciate your thoughts.

hi bcassidy...hi all
It's an experiment (per the artricle), but it's an experiment that appears to be extremely well funded
. The article credits Robert Kulina (vice president of racing for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority) as saying that state racing officials decided to implement the plan to determine whether the New Jersey racing industry could be re-invigorated by a "bold" departure from the status quo.
Isn't that basically New Jersey shorthand
for Hey, we've stepped up to the plate. Now it's your turn...so show us what you got...take your best shot...Go For It.
Gotta be worthy a Bravo, maybe even a standing 'O' don't ya think?

FOS---agreed, it does deserve a standing O. I am very optimistic that this plan will work for several reasons.
It eliminates some serious waste of money--for starters supporting two facilities
it should increase the profit by consolidating more races into fewer days on the days that people will likely attend the races. Friday, saturday, sunday and holidays.
I personallly believe better quality races will increase the handle and eliminate the need for casino funds. This is the big part of the experiment. If the handle increases substantially than it can be a sustainable model. Without a large increase, then we will need outside funding and that could truely be the downfall of all racing eventually. There needs to be more money from purses to make owning race horses profitable. I don't know too many people who can cover the expenses let alone make money from owning races horses. The only way to make this happen is to increase the money earned from racing----it is the key to every aspect of the business.
Kulina has already said they have a plan to stop trainers from claiming horses and dropping them into lower level claiming races with huge purses.
Monmouth Park will soon know how many high class horses will be heading to the shore for the summer meet but I expect other tracks around the country will feel the drain of these higher class animals not NY. Why would you run in other regions when you have PA, NY and now NJ with very large purses. Can you afford to run somewhere else? Doug O'Neil has already moved some of his barn east, can others be far from doing the same? Doug is doing quite well here.
It's a very bold move and one that I hope will work. The results from this experiment have the potential to drastically change the landscape.
I know I will be hoping that this model works this year and is sustainable in the future. Without this success I dont' think there is a lot of hope for this game in the long term.

Mikec---Most people are not aware of this fact---- but the casino industy in AC is taxed at a very favorable rate (the best in the country) and has no desire to build casinos in other higher tax locations. Like racetracks their costs go up tremendously with all the additional building they must do to support the new proliferation of casinos. As you might expect they would rather centralize and have their customers come to them. At some point there will be a saturation of gaming venues and then there profits will be significantly affected. As with any business high costs and low margins are a bad combination.
best regards Brendan
Hi Brendan ; Okay I see your point. I just happened to see where Penn Gaming bought Beulah so figured it might be a possibility. By the way ; I completely agree with your other 3/14 post. That's just the way it is & we'll know very soon. Best to all !

Bohemia wrote:While this sounds great right now, as soon as Monmouth is done for the year what options will there be for people who own Jersey-breds? They will end up running them out-of-state against open company ... makes me so glad I am breeding my mare in Pennsylvania.
Out of State awards for breeders will be able to be funded ( for a change) for horses that finish in the money under the new program. So please breed in Pennsylvania, continue to chase the carrot, it leaves more money for the people who have foaled their mares in NJ.
Bohemia- I look forward to seeing how your foals measure up against the foals of former Kentucky based mares now foaling in PA.
The backyard breeder, like you, is on borrowed time.
