is sub 20 seconds or the first half even possible?
19.11 would be almost impossible if not totally impossible. I think 42 might be possible. I personally witnessed a 42 4/5 half mile at Golden Gate Fields many years ago recorded by the very fast Vikingson.

The Gotham Stakes edition won in dead heat by LURE had really scintillating fractionals for the first and second quarter. He ran in front
until the last step but understandably struggled during the final part of the race. The only other example capable of sustaining the lead while keeping such a torrid pace was Holy Bull.

Hi reenci,
You're memory is correct, Lure and Devil His Due battled throughout fractions of 22.1, 43.4 and finished in a dead heat at the wire in 1:35.63. Lure bounced off the rail more than once. TJ

The race appears at:

The person describing the race proclaims
2 furlongs in :22 1/5 and
4 furlongs in :43 4/5
Hmmm, would really like to double check that information.
