Charles Hatton’s description of the 1960 champion two-year:

"He is pure air and fire and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him; he is indeed a horse ..." Wm. Shakespeare - Henry V

So, where did Halo's unlovely disposition come from?

Is it only an inheritable trait? i would think like people they can have different personalities that are influenced by their environments instead of it being passed on directly. That's not to confuse it with tenacity or toughness which can be similar to outright meanness.

Did Natalma have a similar disposition?

I don't know. This page had a comment on Halo's half-sister Tosmah:

“If you have the impression Tosmah can be a difficult subject that is correct, but then a racing man can tolerate a good deal of the prima donna in one who can run like that. She is not spoiled, but has whim of iron. Perhaps that is what makes her so hard to beat.”

This link describes Cosmah as a sweetie and Almahmoud as the source of the Queen B Beeyotch temper.
