KY DERBY Fractionals by decade

Postby Jorge » Sun Feb 13, 2011 7:23 am

Would really like to know if there is a list of the 10 fastest fractionals by decade clicked during the racing of the Kentucky Derby. I remember that during the 60s and early 70s some really blazing fractionals were set. Can we set such a list?

1940s
1950s
1960s
1970s
1980s
1990s
2000s
2010s

Hi Jorge,
Will get them to you slowly, let's start with the 1940's. Fractions and track conditions, the leader at each point of call and the winner's final time, trainer, breeder and breeding. The fastest fractional times in the 40's: the 1/4 belonged to Olympia, 22.2, the 1/2 also Olympia, 46.2, the 3/4's Coaltown, 1:11.2, the mile belonged to Dispose 1:37.2 and the final time and a new track record for the 1940's era KY Derby was Whirlaway's 2:01.2/5ths. TJ

1940: 23 2/5, :48, 1:12 4/5, 1:38 3/5, 2:05. Track fast. Roman, Roman, Roman, Bimelech,

Count Fleet, Winner- Br.c. by Reigh Count-Quickly, by Haste. Trained by G. D. Cameron; bred in Kentucky by Mrs. J. Hertz.

Pensive, Winner- Ch.c. by Hyperion-*Penicuik II, by Buchan. Trained by B. A. Jones; bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm.

1945: 23 1/5, :48, 1:14, 1:41, 2:07. Track Muddy. Typical of Fred Hooper's horses this one also went to the lead at every point of call. This was the beginning of Mr. Hooper's dynasty, bought from the breeder of the 1940 Kentucky Derby winner and one of a handful of horses bought prior to Mr. Hooper's breeding operation. He gave 10 times more than the going rate for a Sir Gallahad baby to secure ownership of this horse at that time....he liked this horse that much!! The trainer didn't want to run in the Derby and Mr. Hooper had to twist his arm:>)
Hoop Jr., Winner- B.c. by *Sir Gallahad III- One Hour, by *Snob II. Trained by I. H. Parke; bred in Kentucky by R. A. Fairbairn.

1946: 23 2/5, :48, 1:14 1/5, 1:40 4/5, 2:06 3/5. Track Slow. Spy Song in front all the way and including the mile fraction, couldn't withstand Assault's finish opening up from the top of the stretch.
Assault, Winner- Ch. c. by Bold Venture- Igual, by Equipoise. Trained by M. Hirsch; bred in Texas by King Ranch.

1947: 24, :49, 1:14 2/5, 1:40 2/5, 2:06 4/5. Track slow. Jet Pilot took the lead from his extreme outside post and posted all the fractions hanging on by a head over Phalynx at the wire! Tom Smith trained (of Seabiscuit fame ) for Main Chance Farm.

Citation, Winner- B. c. by Bull Lea- *Hydroplane II, by Hyperion. Trained by B.A. Jones; bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm.

1949: 22 2/5, :46 2/5, 1:12 3/5, 1:38 3/5, 2:04 1/5. Track fast. Olympia posted all the fractions including the mile. Capot raced 2nd through out, took the lead at the head of the lane where Ponder's rally took took him to victory by 3.
Ponder, Winner- Dk.b.c. by Pensive- Miss Rushin by *Blenheim II. Trained by B.A. Jones; bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm.

1940s

Postby aethervox » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:20 am

@TJ - thanks for the very informative post.

Jorge, here are the fastest quarter splits run in the 1940s.

The Derby charts are a bit confusing (in my opinion) in this decade, as they don't indicate who was leading at the first quarter, just who was leading at the start (at least that's my take on it - I welcome any clarification :) ).

Year - Qtr - Split - Horse leading at split (or at start)
1949 - 1 - 0:22.40 - Olympia
1943 - 1 - 0:23.20 - Count Fleet
1945 - 1 - 0:23.20 - Bymeabond (led at start, Hoop Jr. led at half)
1941 - 2 - 0:23.20 - Dispose
1948 - 2 - 0:23.20 - Coaltown
1940 - 1 - 0:23.40 - Bimelech (led at start, Roman led at half)
1941 - 1 - 0:23.40 - Staretor (led at start, Dispose led at half)
1946 - 1 - 0:23.40 - Lord Boswell (led at start, Spy Song led at half)
1948 - 1 - 0:23.40 - Coaltown
1943 - 2 - 0:23.40 - Count Fleet
