breaking and training

Postby walaa » Wed Mar 02, 2011 7:08 pm

Info on breaking and trainign centers appreciated IF you have knowledge of them. I had a trainer in mind, sending my filly off this month, then see some pretty grim reports :( There are pages of facilities in the Bloodhorse mag, but after talking to some, I would NEVER send a horse to them. Then again, maybe they talk that way, because if they havent heard of you, or you dont have a Street Cry, etc, they dont really care, who knows. I may not be a big wig, but I can pay the bill :D but now am really concerned I wont find the right place for my big girl. Any recommendations, please PM me, no need to start a huge list of bad/good trainers on here, I am looking at 40-60 a day, less than 40 is bad, more than 60, not interested, thanks Katrina PLEASE pm with info if you do not want to discuss your knowledge here, I am looking at breaking training centers, not actually track trainers yet, thanks again

Steve Cauthen does a really nice job. ( Yes, that Steve Cauthen ). His farm's name is Dreamfields. It's in Verona, KY. I'll send a PM with his phone number.

Chris Melton in Columbia Ky is one of the best. We get a lot of his horses for their final race preps/schooling races and without exception they have all been very well broken to saddle.

He has a nice training center with his own starting gate and official workouts. Located in Columbia Kentucky. I believe he charges $40/day, and is well worth it, if he has space.

Recommend you at least talk to Randy Rentz who trains in Ehrhart, SC..

Not KY but definitely a honest and above board trainer that has an excellent reputation. He will also tell you ever flaw your horse has and if he thinks you should continue training it; i.e., it is etimes hard to take when someone tells you your baby is ugly.

also consider sending them to Ocala. Abracadabra has a good rep with the clients I have worked with and they are track ready when they have comeback. Plus who wound pass up a trip to FL to see their "kids"!

it's okay if someone thinks they are ugly :D I am only concerned with the care they get, if they take better care of the "pretty" ones, rather than the ones that need to be brought along at a different pace, than everyone does the same thing every day, kindof of training, then that would be a concern for me :D But I will surely check them out, thank for all suggestions keep em coming :!:

Good question & topic, Walaa -

I'm writing down the information on the MidAtlantic & FL recommendations, as well as the KY ones.

Might be wrong but I think Seattle slew was started in SC.. however, not
by Rentz..

I have a 2 YO with Rentz and he is jogging a mile almost every day and he is also turned out every day. I was giving my colt $100 worth of SmartPak supplements per month and Rentz told me he has a special feed made for him with everything I am supplementing, except gelatin, already added.

Wow, when Steve Cauthen can't make it, we are all in trouble. I've never been there, but how about Stone Farm? I would think that they would have a good operation if they do training.

I realize that this is too far away, but I will put in a plug for Country Life Farm's Merryland training center in MD. They have a 7/8ths mile track, they have an official clocker come weekly, and have really good employees; all of the horses leave there virtually ready to run. My horse left there, worked 6f once, and ran second in a 9f MSW race his first time out. If you check out their web page, they have a crawler that mentions recent Merryland trainees that are entering, and those horses VERY often win first time out.

Gayle Woods

Postby walaa » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:53 pm

Any thoughts on Gayle Woods training center? If it is bad, please pm me, again, not trying to start a bashing thread, just looking for experiences if you have had them with any particular breaking centers. Leaning towards her place as of now, thanks Katrina
