In another thread Whirlaway opines that Soldat is likely the best three year old in training right now.
My vote would go to Premier Pegasus who's just followed up his runaway San Felipe win with a bullet five furlongs in :59 2/5 in preparation for the Santa Anita Derby -- performance that matches bis near-perfect bottom line.

I have to agree with this.. i don't know about hte delusional part and all but I think mo is the BEST horse in training for a 3YO. maybe period right now.dublino wrote:The best 3 yr old in training is Uncle Mo.
He was Champion 2yr old and won the Breeders Cup Juvenile.
Until someone beats him he is the best anyone thinking any different is delusional at best.
I have questions about his lack of being tested, but as far as pure talent, li don't think there is any better. I think there are a few that cOULD be better with some seasoning

Only with a perfect ride, no traffic issues, and probably no slop.
How many times do you see a stunning drop-from-the-clouds win, only to never see it duplicated? (Zenyatta was very much the exception.)

Certainly everyone is entitled have an opinion on any matter in horseracing. But if the question is which is the best 3YO by evaluating the body of work, I don't see any way possible you come up with anything other than Uncle Mo.
I don't know if he'll win the roses, and I have hunches about a lot of these. Hunches however, can be based on more than works and PPs. From an evidentiary standpoint, any answer other than Uncle Mo is folly.

Whomever is the best three year old in training now will very likely NOT be the best three year old in training come Derby day.
I think one of the things that makes the Triple Crown so HARD to win is the whole "peaking" thing.. Secretariat was not at his peak on Derby day - he was improving. He was at his PEAK on Belmont day.
Whichever three year old who makes the cut, gets a good post position for his running style, gets a good trip on the surface he does well on, who is also the best 3yo that day, will win the Derby.
You cannot convince me that all of the Derby winners, over the past 10 years, were each the very Best horse of their generation.

Yeah. What she said. Thanks Madelyn--I was thinking this too---and didn't have the energy to post it. Both twins sick today.
To add an original thought of my own . . . notice how Derby winners do not great stallions make, as a rule . . .

You Americans don't seem to get it.
The reason for the Derby was that on the same day every year the 3 yr old generation would be tested and the winner of the race was the best of their generation, this seems to be an idea ye lot don't seem to grasp?

YES I AGREE ...at that point in time....but then we reshuffle the deck in AUGUST...and deal again in the TRAVERS.....the mid summer derby....which i myself regard as the real race for 3yo's that have grown up and into themselves.....
