Maybe Santa Anita would be best served with a dirt track like CD has....with all this rain, why didn't it wash out, why did the base hold up, why did trainers feel the track was safe enough to work the best 3YO's in the country over? The rain's CD had recently were equal to the deluge' that hits SA every year....only their track always breaks down, washes away, gets hard and unsafe. Does it have to do with the track itself or is it the area the tracks are located....any idea's? Here's an article. TJ

Before a storm arrives, the SA track is sealed, heavy equipment is rolled ovber the track, so when the rain pelts the track, the rain rolls off & drains.
When you have 24 inches of rain, the tracks cushion becomes history & the track becomes to hard. Thats when the injuries occur. Does CD roll & seal their track like SA?

Hi Louis,
There isn't a race track in America that doesn't seal the track when a big strom threatens, that's just basic common sense, preventive maintenance, but that still won't stop the top surface (cushion) from being washed away under strong rain...it simply slows nature down a little.....if sealing did the trick, SA wouldn't be in trouble. The asphalt base is just not suited for draining that kind amounts of water.
So the underlying sand is just washed away and horses are just galoping on a kind of sand beach with almost no protection.
Last but not least the drainage system is filled with very small fine sand particles. Leaving nothing else than instable mud after such a spell
