Was anyone else as disappointed in the NBC Derby coverage as me? HATS? You're talking about HATS?

I kept turning it off and going back to Belmont. Little did I know that Versus (?) was playing the Churchill Downs races all day. My fault for not checking.

And NBC completely BLEW the race call. They simultaneously ran the track announcer and their own announcer so I could not make head or tails of the call.

I thought ESPN did a superior job on the Breeder's Cup. NBC'S coverage left a lot to be desired.

I gave up expecting much from television coverage of racing years ago.

My most-loathed Kentucky Derby coverage is the interview with a celebrity who knows nothing about racing, and who is asked about his area of interest, with several minutes of blather usually about another sport. I think this is an awkward attempt to show that hey, this celebrity is here, so the Derby must have some measure of importance, but I wish they would stop doing these interviews.

Even radio coverage reeks now. Years ago, WHAS radio used to go out and prowl around the backstretch and do interviews with people who knew something about horses. This year, I caught an interview with Zito in which they asked him about Osama Bin Laden.

I keep my tv remote handy, and wander off during coverage. I doubt if I miss much these days.

Biggest disappointment to me in media this year goes to the Louisville Courier Journal. Go there and ALL YOU SEE is celebrity hat cra p. Ultimate was the picture of Major League loser Kate Gosselin on the Red Carpet. Not a picture or story on the Derby itself on the Front page. PATHETIC.

I would rather watch Dr. Bramledge do surgery on ArchArchArch

So would I.

Upon reflection, I think I would even rather clean a stall than gaze upon Her Boringness.

I've met Zito. Did he know who Bin Laden was?

"I've met Zito. Did he know who Bin Laden was?" Well he does always seem to speak well of someone named God.

You guys are way ahead of me. I had to google "Kate Gosselin" to learn she's just another reality TV no-talent capitalizing on her Warhol 15 minutes of fame. Why would anyone care?

Did anyone see the Versus coverage of the 'lesser' races? How was it?

Did TVG have any coverage at all? (Still on the fence about ordering that)

Hats. Go figger.

I watched it, it was a lot better audio wise than what NBC did. It was a mix of human interest/horse stuff but not as good as the ESPN coverage from years past where you got post parades.

And I complained on nbc sports facebook wall one HOUR before the derby about the audio but the absolute worst moments was the isolated sound on those incredibly off key, probably drunk off their ***es people singing my old kentucky home.

Hi El,
He's a NYer....he know's who bin laden is/was all right. Concerning the NBC coverage, lots of sizzle but little bacon......until the walkover, there were 3 trainers who stuck in my mind who were interviewed during the walk over from the barn area to the paddock....all seemed positive about their horse and the race....Motion, Assmussen and Ritvo......Motion when asked will he handle the dirt....kept saying did you see how good he worked, over and over.....it prompted me to make a saver bet.....Motion doesn't give many clues....that was a big one:>) TJ

I had never heard of the Versus network until this week.

By the time I figured it out and tuned in, the race coverage was over and they had bass fishing. Kind of interesting, though---about a guy who loved it so much he moved here from Japan.

Way better than hats.

The local low-power tv station continues to have sub-channel coverage of golf games in Korea, Asian badminton championships, etc. They seem to have gotten past women's curling.

Still better than hats.

I got home late, so I turned on my TV right in the middle of the singing. My jaw literally dropped. It seemed like all the singers (and I use that term very loosely) were two or three beats behind the music, so I started thinking about how if you call into a radio station you're supposed to turn down your radio because of the delay...and then I realized that the BAND WAS RIGHT THERE. There was NO delay. LOL
