Epsom Derby's Early Favorite

Postby TJ » Sat May 14, 2011 8:27 am

Her Majesty The Queen, acquired the Kentucky bred Carlton House...the early Epsom Derby favorite, as a gift from breeder Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. The Queen has never won the Epsom Derby. Carlton House became the early favorite for the Derby after he won the Totesport Dante Stakes (Eng-G2) Thursday over a good turf course at York....the time for the 1 5/16 miles was 2:13.49. TJ

Love a horse that can thread the needle. What's his breeding?

I am analyzing the chances of:

FURY (grey H 2008) http://www.pedigreequery.com/fury20
NATIVE KHAN (grey H 2008) http://www.pedigreequery.com/native+khan

Both greys finished quite strong in the Two Thousands Guineas (Eng-1).
Both may improve in the Epsom Derby.

 The only "problem" they have is that the last grey to win the Derby achieved the feat in 1946 (Airborne).

Thank you TJ, he has a wonderful pedigree to me as I was an immense fan of M and hoping his son SC will carry on which it appears he is doing quite nicely. Not as familiar with his female line as I am not a very apt student of pedigrees. Look forward to the race.

I agree with you, albeit winning the Epsom Derby in England seems quite an elusive feat for greys. Contrary to what happens in France where greys are always in the spotlight in their Classic races. One is tempted to think that some sort of attraction law applies in France where they seem to favor more the performance of greys. By some unknown reason I haven't seen the same enthusiasm in the former. Perhaps some of our friends can explain the reasons.

Anyway the law of probabilities is ticking second by second, or should I say year by year. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Bred to run all day doesn't begin to describe the stamina in his pedigree. I suppose if the Mr. P speed does its magic, we'll now see a fad for Mr. P in Europe.

Heck, he's even got a line to Red Rum's sire's dam--that would be Virginia Water. No wonder Mill Reef is so popular for chasers over there.

Carleton House may be US bred, but there is very, very little US blood that is used in today's US racing in his pedigree.

More opportunities!

High-quality horses with grey coats are more prevalent in France, thanks to the population of several high-quality stallions and mares passing it along. Think Dalakhani, Slickly, Daylami, Linamix, Sagamix, Bellypha, etc, plus all their daughters, plus all the daughters of Dancer's Image, Caro, Crystal Palace.....

Hi Viney,
I was trying to see the connection you mentioned to Red Rum and can't find it? Could you explain the connection between Red Rum's sires dam (Akimbo) and Virginia Water that I'm obviously missing...thanks. TJ

Top three sires in Europe 2010, 1.Galileo, 2.Kings Best, 3.Dubawi

Kingmambo and Machevelian have been huge in Europe for years.

Grey horse

Postby Bettina » Tue May 17, 2011 12:42 am

Hallo,
maybe it's a bit off topic, but the German Derby, run since 1869, was never won by a gray/white horse. The last one, who came closest was Sternkonig (by Kalaglow) in thirdplaced in 1993.

This season there is the chance to see a whitecoloured starter in the abovementioned race with Nice Danon.

Best regards, Bettina

POUR MOI came flying down the stretch to win the Investec Epsom Derby.
His jockey also came flying just before the finish line. Yikes, o! youth confidence. Thanks God Almighty he didn't lose.

Hi Jorge,
He really did "pour" it on at the finish....Carlton House looked like he was making a nice move from far back and Pour Moi came from further back to run over the top of him and the leader. TJ

I think it's more graceful for the favorite horse to have arrived in third position ---given the flashy circumstances in which the winner triunphed---than to have arrived second in a heartbreaking defeat. Whether or not people may criticize the rider, its a relief to know that the winner won for the joy of his well-respected trainer.

Putting aside this angle...wow...this photo belongs to the ages!! Don't you think? Would like to see that photo!! Makes me remember a somehow similar picture featuring Jean Cruguet aboard Seattle Slew.
