Looking for Training stable/farm in CA

Postby oleos93 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 7:23 pm

Looking for some stables/farms close by some of the major tracks in CA. Mostly, Los AL, Santa Anita and Hollywood.

We are looking for a stable/farm that does basic track training to get horses fir without the huge cost of being at the track. Or for layovers and lay ups. Or whatever the case may be. A place that will allow owner input is a must.

If you know of such places I would like to check out 3 or 4 and see what one best suits our needs. If you have web sites that would be so awesome!!

Thanks!!

I used Harris Farms for the last filly I had broke. She came back extremely professional about everything, including the gate, and has run well in her first two starts, both seconds. It was $50 a day in 2010. There weren't too many other charges, and shoes and things were reasonable. Since they've raised a few Eclipse winners, I assume they know what they are doing, and they are centrally located in the state right off of I-5, so shipping is reasonable there. I'm not certain about how welcome owner input would be, as I left them alone.

With Harris it varies alot.

When I had my last mare Deaconess foal there the poor foal came down with a disease and they treated is like we were dirt. When we went to leave with the filly that had the disease on their property -mind you- that they didn't take care or medicate the poor thing- they acted like helping us load up was really really going out of their way.
My tax advisor too had a difficult time with them last year. He brought a mare over to be bred and in three months they never bothered breeding her.
Majxmom I don't mean to be mean but with Harris it s either on or the other.

hi Oleos,
it's going to be hard to find a place thet alows owner self input, however I know a place that is about 50min from HP and Santa Anita and about 1.30h from Los Al, they have a half a mile track, eurosizer, round pens, uphill trails..., I actualy had horses race ready there couple a years ago but it was too much of a hastle shiping them to work ones a week so I moved to HP. But if you know how to do basic conditioning you can just board there and do it yourself, let me know if you're interested I'll give you the numbers

The CTBA Industry directory lists all the training centers. Sounds like you want mostly Southern California farms.

We use Green Valley Training Center in Chowchilla for starting and the first four months of basic training. Leland Decker runs the show and he is a pro. I always get my calls answered or returned in short order. Training runs $35 per day, I believe.
