basically, it's pretty savvy. they restrict the race to horses whoose sires raced through the age of 4 at least basically. so if you retired your horse at the age of 3 to stud, his offspring can't run in the hambletonian

Well yes, but Standardbreds allow AI and embryo transplant. The frozen semen of a dead stallion can be used. I'm not sure what is in the crosshairs of this proposal but you can be sure it is not purely for "the good of the sport."

Especially since stallions under four who left racing because of injury are still eligible to sire Hambletonian entrants.

It seems to just be about keeping the good ones going a year or two longer before retiring them to stud. Probably a PR thing.

standardbreds on average have a much longer career.. they are bigger, thicker, and more stought horses.. A TB doesn't compare. Their training methods are much different as well. Atleast from what I observe at the barn I go to every so often.
