Sabino horses from the 1950's you remember. MENTION'EM!!

Postby Jorge » Sun Apr 10, 2005 7:33 am

I would earnestly appreciate from those of you who saw many Thoroughbreds during the 1950's to please retreive from your memory any case you remember, regardless of its racing talent.

This is very important to me because during those years, the sabino pattern was very unconspicuous due to the lack of the Northern Dancer, the Halos and other factors. If you don't remember the name of the case please give me any hint and someone here may supply the missing data.

Sabino Thoroughbreds from the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's are of extreme importance to me because these years are sort of lacking crystal clear identifyable influences like I can pinpoint now from the 1910's and the post-1960's.

Thanks in advance for any assistance and participation.

Blessings,

Can you explain exactly what a Sabino is? I have lots of books from the 30's thru the 60's with pictures of the champion horses of each year. I could check the pictures, if I knew what I was looking for :?

Dear Halo,

Thank you so much for the fine courtesy of trying to assist this search.
Here are some clues to look for:

01. High ragged knee-level extensions of leg white quite distinct from the straigh across design seen on other horses with markings.

02. Big blazes, better if these are broad and long extending. Better if these extend to the lower lips.

03. Any kind of curious solitary white mark on the belly, neck shoulder etc. In other words, anything strange.

04. Many leg markings extending high enough to look suspicious.

For a more comprehensive reading please go my site, especifically the first dozen pages of section "History and Development of White Thoroughbreds". The site is open to the public at:

http://www.geocities.com/thoroughbredpr

For the best visual asessment on this topic the following two articles are a must:

"A Lighter Shade of Red" by Frank Holmes at:

"By A Hair" by Rebecca Overton at:

I am sure these materials will be of great assistance.

Thanks for your valuable thoughtful help.

Blessings,

Jorge

Sabino Rabicano horses from the 50's

Postby Tap The Mint » Tue Apr 12, 2005 2:44 pm

Hi Jorge,
I too am fascinated by your color research and have been following a lot of your results via the Net. I can add one line of Sabino I believe that may help. A stallion named BILLINGS, foaled 1945 by *Mahmoud ex Native Gal by Sir Gallahad III. I can't find any photographs of him other than a head shot from a magazine ad that I scanned and posted on my pedigree page but I did see him back in the 70's when we bred our mare to him. He had a huge white blaze and four white stockings and is the sire of my foundation sire, Our Last Bill, who also was a Sabino and threw the trait in many of his offspring. I also have a bay filly by Tap The Mint, (carries *Mahmoud also) out of an Our Last Bill daughter that is a beautiful bay Sabino with four white stockings, blaze and a huge 'belly spot'. I have tried to trace the Sabino gene also and I have a theory that perhaps it comes through the *Mahmoud line. He being a grey didn't show his markings but I know he also had a blaze and three stockings. They were the same markings that Northern Dancer inherited and seem to pass on down the line?

Yes, Mahmoud is absolutely a key sabino carrier. You can see his markings in this photo here before he greyed out entirely:

He certainly gets some sabino influence from his third dam, Lady Josephine, who was a chestnut with tall hind stockings and a big blaze, classic sabino markings. Vahren, the dam of The Tetrarch was probably a sabino, too, based on the tiny picture of her I have. I suspect Blenheim and Blandford were also sabinos (though they were not extremely marked individuals), and they are tail male to Birdcatcher who certainly looks to be a sabino himself. But this all stands to reason because sabino is *very* prevalent in the TB and has been since the beginning. :D

And while I'm at it, Mahmoud (et al) is tail-male to the Darley Arabian, the sabino grand-daddy of them. :D

Dear Tap The Mint,

You are absolutely right, BILLINGS was indeed a bona fide sabino. I dont remember quite well if it was at the Churchill Downs' site, especifically the section devoted to the Kentucky Derby, but there is a photo of the Derby finish where he appears with his prominent blaze. I am recalling correctly, he arrived among the first 6 or 7 finishers that day.

Thanks again,

Blessings,

Jorge,
You remember Billings quite well. He finished Fourth in the Kentucky Derby to Citation who went on to win the Triple Crown. Billings is one of my all time favorites as anyone who sees my home breds will realize as most of them are descended from him.
By the way, have you seen the solid white filly on Tap The Mint's page. She was born last year in Texas and is out of a Tap The Mint daughter. Of course she is sired by Arctic White.

Thank you Jorge for posting these links for interesting reading. I have been to your website and there are some pedigree mistakes. Would you mind contacting me by email so I can tell you? There are also some horses missing. Norsire had a cremello last year named Trillionair and there are several other horses missing that I can tell you about. Thanks.
