trainers getting over on the betting public

Postby bdw0617 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 8:01 am

hollywood park before the races cancelled, a first time gelding won at a hug price on sunday.

no where in the program, wasn't announced until they were half way done with the post parade.

no doubt in my mind the trainer hit a lick on that race. man that's so screwed up.

The winner of Race 5 on 11/20 at Hollywood was entered as a colt and ran as a gelding. I think the complaint is this info was not reported to BDW until midway through the post parade. He apparently thinks this was important for handicapping. I am not sure why the trainer is getting blamed for this. In most jurisdictions, if a horse was entered with incorrect sex the horse would be scratched and the trainer fined. Is Cali different?

Great, thanks cewright - now what, exactly, is a "hug" price? The kind of price that makes you so happy that you hug everyone?

Sounds right to me. A hug price. Slightly less than a jump up and scream price.
Sorry BDW. But use spell check once in a while, huh?

The slip-up could have occurred at any point and could be anyone's 'fault.'

"a first time gelding won at a hug price on sunday"

Where I come from, it usually only takes one time to geld a colt. Those that it takes a second or third time probably need a "hug".

that's too funny :D

i can take a little ribbing from time to time

To clarify, I did not wager on the race, but I was watching the race. Race 5, the horse was ran as a colt, and they waited until the post parade was almost over to let everyone know he was a gelding.

The horse had been working well in the morning. very well actually. that information paired with the fact that he is a first time gelding would have at the very least, made some people include him on the pick 6, who isn't going to include a 20 to 1 first time gelding on a "deep" leg of a pick 6 who has a serious pick 6 ticket?

glad you took it in the friendly spirit with which it was intended.

I have often wondered if a first time gelding is universally considered a good or a bad thing. Seems to me there could be arguments for both.

They will have a slight weight advantage over running as a colt and be a hell of a lot smarter.

There is argument that geldings are more focused than colts, since they no longer have fillies on their mind. Also, I think there might be a physical effect, since horses can't wear jock straps and "holding them up" must take some effort.

I fail to see how running a gelding as a colt or running a colt as a gelding is getting something over on the public.

One I don't think the track odds maker cares if it is a colt or gelding

[2] I ran a gelding as a colt many times.. Every time he came up on the program as a colt I'd call and they said too late for this race but for sure next time out.. I forgot how many time that happened.
