Lucy Webb passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer.
Lucy was a MD/PA/WV owner/trainer who's speciality was fixing "broken" horses.
One example is Totally Selfish who she purchased off the truck hauling her to the slaughter house. Totally Selfish was delivered to Lucy' farm in MD with a case of Strangles around February and by the next October had won around $70,000. That part was an article in Thoroughbred Times.
Lucy sold Totally Selfish to a syndicate for $75,000 and a year later claimed her at from a $5000 claiming race at Charles Town; i.e., the syndicate, like her NY owners that sent her to newBolton, could not get Totally Selfish to preform.
Lucy got TS back in shape and won some more races and eventually sold her to a QH farm as a brood mare.
Second is the story of Warrior Belle, a 4 YO maiden mare from Canada that had been racing for two years w/o a win.. It took Lucy about 90 days to "fix" Warrior Belle and she entered in a MSW @ Charles Town with colts and geldings. Warrior Belle won that MSW handily and 30 days later broke a track record at Penn National.
Lucy was a great horsewoman and friend. And I will miss her.
Martha??

Sad,she was a great lady and loved horses. We had great conversations. She will be missed. And she always tried to really find a home for her horses after their career and before it was too late.
The sport and industry survive not only because of the champions that are remembered forever but also because of the losers that are so easy to forget...

I had a client in Williamsburg who was a retired TV executive and we tried to get Charles Osgood, to do a feature on Lucy and her exploits but were not able to pull it off
The story of Lucy Webb would make a great movie or TV special, and it would be real..
If anyone has any contacts I would be glad to help round up people that can relate many of her feats, almost feats of magic.
For example, Lucy sed to buy "flippers" or horses that flipped their palates and train them with bitless bridles and then race them with bitless bridles that looked like they had bits, and win.
Her theory was flippers flip their palates because they suck too much air through their mouths and if there was no bit to break the mouth's seal they would not flip.. Stewards eventually caught onto what she was doing and she gave it up.
Her father was a trainer in Cuba and she never really lived outside the race horse community.
Her brother Sam Webb races o/o Penn national and knows far more about Lucy than me, as do a lot of you.
One of us, oor all of us should be able to get this great story about a great woman published or filmed or something

Sounds like a great idea. And from the little bit I saw already, I would love to read more about her. I never met Lucy but I did see a lot of her listings on handride.com
BTW, Griff, my folks live in W-burg and I see you're in the area. We visit a few times a yr.
I will ask around and see if I can find anybody interested or anybody that knows anybody...

I was so sorry to hear that Lucy passed. She was a great horseperson. Sometimes, I felt as if she were a "horse whisperer"....her intuition was uncanny.
Lucy was somewhat of a mentor to me. I purchased my first three broodmares from her field of mares off the track. So far, these mares have netted me three solid racehorses. One filly, named "Luciana" was retired (knee chip) after being in the money in open company in all eight (or is it nine?) starts (save for one). Luciana is ready for her date with Stevie Wonderboy. If all goes well, next year I will have Lucy's Wonderboy or Lucy's Wonder (filly).
Lucy is one of the unsung heroes of our sport. I know that somewhere, she is tending a great herd of all the Thoroughbreds who were not so fortunate to have ended up in her field. Lucy is home and they are safe at last.
