You're dating yourself, and probably not in the direction you intend.

BTW, it's "should have SEEN that coming," "not should have SAW that coming". You may find this trivial, but I find it appalling that foreign born, foreign educated professionals speak and write better than American so-called professionals.

I dont' like the fact that you are a right wring coo coo bird yet i'm able to usually keep those thoughts very much to myself.

stop taking spelling / posts so serious. it's not that serious people. it really isn't. a thread should not get side tracked for pages becuase a person mis spelled a word in a post.

It matters because it's a mental habit of trying to do everything properly and communicating with clarity.

If I signal lane changes every time, even when nobody else is sharing the road, then chances are when when I have been driving 15 hours and really, really need to sleep, I will signal automatically when the cops are watching.

Don't leave it to other people to interpret what you mean. Make clear what you mean.

I cut the English as a second-language (or third or fourth) some slack.

Native speakers should do better every time, but they don't.

Why does it matter? Slovenly writing that has to be deciphered is like showing up at a social event with rumpled clothes and three days past needing a bath. It shows a lack of respect for potential readers.

Just because Canada has three languages, French, English, and Canadian, doesn't necessarily mean that we in the U. S. can't expect literacy regarding our one national language. You've seen how confused I get if something is misspelled. Lord help me on this thread if I hadn't had my dictionary because I might have thought that Chantal was sick with misothelioma when she just really hated women. What do you call a woman who hates Mike Smith? Intelligent?

What's a rat's pajama? Do you have pajama's made of rhodent wool? Are they warm? They don't smell do they? I'm trying to think of something imaginative to give my wife this Xmas. Can you recommend a catalog? We've got plenty of barn cats around here, so there is no way I'd find a rat to weave my own. I've got to find something. My wife is tiring of Xmas clothes made of squirrel pelts.

I lived for a short time on the Canadian border in VT. I remember when the Canadian $ was worth half the U. S. $ and French Canadians were trying to secede. I think I saw my first blaze orange painted house near Quebec City. I've got a feeling all the U. S. hunters of that era saw that house too because that was about the same time blaze orange became the fashion fad for every gun toting tobacco chewing redneck hunter south of the northern border. Colorful place, Quebec.

Some years ago, my wife and I vacationed in Montreal. We didn't have any trouble with the dinner menus printed in French or English, but the one written in Canadian was hell to understand. Had to get help and then we realized the waiter was French and he couldn't speak either English or Canadian. His name tag read Charles DeGaulle.

Don't be so tough on those of us who wish preserve our national language as it was donated to us by the British. The U. S. is going through a tough period. Half the kids are cheating on the standardized tests so they can get into college. Fifty percent of those applying for the military can't pass the test and of the 50% that can pass the test, 75% can't meet the physical requirements. No wonder our imperialistic policies are a losing proposition and thank the lord for fast food restaurants. No one would be employed in the U. S. without them. :)

I can't stop laughing, this video is crude but with the mention of K'bec I had to post it.

Eh! Westover your link can't be opened and when I searched it out it is blocked in the U. S. Typical Canadian thinking. If it is good stuff, we don't want anyone in the states to have it. I probably won't be able to find those nice rat's pajamas here in the states either.

You all north of the border better behave or we in the U. S. will be forced to get our act together. Then you all will be in trouble. Eh!

Shammy, I would question your "one" national language comment, here in the States. Most food products now have english and mexican on them, not much different than the cluttered 3 language packaging up in Canada

Terrapin Flyer: Valid point. When my wife has removed my straight jacket and let's me near a computer, I often don't post anything near being intelligent. I was just kidding around with Westover since she was the one who made the "rat pajama" statement about the importance (or lack thereof) of correct spelling. The world is at the very minimum bi-lingual. Just to keep pace with all the languages, I've recently ordered my Canadian language course from Rosetta Stone. Can't wait to get it. Speaking Canadian has always been a dream of mine.

I grew in up in era when the school teacher actually held a rod and often used it. Today, we've got more teachers having sex with their students than actually teaching them something useful and important like correct spelling and complete sentences. None of the teachers that taught me growing up while holding a rod were people (cayote ugly is the term that fits) I'd have been interested in having sex with, so I spent my time studying. Maybe introducing corporal punishment again would encourage kids to study and they could actually learn several languages.

I am also one that get annoyed at the lack of grammar and spelling from people posting and typing online. It is amazing(sad, actually). Everyone makes a typo once in awhile so I can get by that. However, when people don't even have the concept of the difference of their, there and they're...sigh...Let me just say, it gets on my nerves. It really does.
