I'll Have Another was fine in the post parade for the Santa Anita Derby. He should have been ponying Lava Man, who was tossing his head and acting like he was running! It will be interesting to see how Lava Man responds to the huge crowd and the excitement of Derby Day--and how much he'll be able to help I'll Have Another stay relaxed.

According to the article, they'll have a plan b. just in case the ol' campaigner gets his knickers in a twist.

You'll get worse odds on Lava Man going bananas than on the horse he's ponying.

I thought ponies were supposed to be 'bomb-proof.'

I was on the van with Lava Man from Lexinton to Louisville. He bounced and played most of the way. The Black was beside him looking weary, but the old man was full of himself and looked amazing!
When the van driver and I took coggins and health into the office, The van driver said," I doubt I have Lava Man on this load."
I laughed and said," you really do. He's a pony now." He was impressed.
The old horse looks great. Fat and sassy. Dappled and amazing in in his new career.

Hey, this may become a new trend: to use a famous ex-racer as a pony
for a Derby starter. Why not? Looks like a very good sign.

i've always wondered but never asked why this wasn't standard OP. I mean i dobut it's going to bring more people to the races but it would be pretty sweet to see horses like lava man, sky jack, mine that bird, evening attire, commentator or what not in post parades or what not. i don't see the need to have to find a home for horses that people want to see. I'd be pretty neat for racing fans to get to go to the track and just see horses they used to root for and bet on.

It is easier to train a horse to be a racehorse than to train a racehorse not to be one. You kind of expect a horse that is ready to run to act foolish, its the last thing you want from a lead pony.
There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle.

It's not that hard to turn around a OTT horse. Just takes time. Pull the racing slick's and throw them out in a big pasture to be a horse. Bring them back after a year, and pretend they're a 2 year old fat green broke horse that doesn't know squat. Just takes time and patience, you'll be rewarded. Many disciplines' do it.
