Little Mike.. poor horse

Postby bdw0617 » Mon Nov 05, 2012 11:53 pm

won the Arlington million, the Joe Hirsh and the Turf, and doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning a single award.

Hi bdw,
I don't believe Little Mike is out of the running for the top male turf horse. He beat the champion and leading candidate for the male turf eclipse award, Point of Entry and in his wake was St Nicholas Abbey who was third in the voting to Cape Blanco for the same eclipse award last year. Looking at both Wise Dan and Little Mike this year...they both won 3 GR I's on the turf....but Mikey's wins came at a mile and an eight, a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half. Wise Dan's 3 GR I wins were all at one mile. The excitement generated by Wise Dan in his devastating mile wins could possibly put him in line for HOY. But...when it comes to top male turf horse, Little Mike's credentials are legitimate and he will get his share of votes in that category. TJ

In a two day BC longshot party he is the only horse I regret not betting. His Arlington Million was a brilliant race.

I think Wise Dan gets the Turf Eclipse because his record is ultimately better, and his 3 grade 1 wins were very impressive.

Ignore his two dirt starts (a win and a 2nd), and he is undefeated on the turf on the year.

Little Mike won 3 grade 1's as well, but aside from the BC Turf, if the horse didn't get his way on the front end he lost...
His loss to Point of Entry in the Joe Hirsh, he faded to 5th.
He ran 3rd to Mr Commons at a mile in the Shoemaker Mile.
And a 4th to Doubles Partner in the Canadian Turf S.

Hi zinn,
His BC race was pretty amazing too....setting a BC record and tied the SA track record posted by Hawkster back in 1989, a quick 2:22.4! TJ

Hi Cree,
I agree, there's no doubt Dan will be favored to be voted the Champion Male Turf horse, but Little Mike will get a fair share of the votes in this category. These two are so similar...both 7 years old, both geldings, both earned near $2,700,000 in 2012....Mike edging Dan slightly in earnings. Very few if any, have won this category without winning over a distance of ground and if Point Of Entry beat Mike....he'd be hailed as a top contender to beat Wise Dan in this category. In hindsight it's easy to see Mike isn't a miler and that is the reason why his form is spotty and Wise Dan looks to be so much better. Mike was beaten every time he went a mile on the turf this year. His three GR I wins came going long....his only defeat going long was over an off turf course at Saratoga when Point Of Entry beat him. These guys are two very different kinds of turf horses and some eclipse voter's like to see a horse win beyond a mile before they crown them a champion...shades of the Frankel controversy:>) TJ

wise dan, is becoming one of the best horses i have seen in a while. and it's funny i literally remember his maiden race. he has gotten better with age. he wasn't always this good. he wasn't this good last year.

what i really like about him is they aren't afraid to run him. they dont' baby him

I SO regret this tout - I "only commented (or so I am told later)...that no matter what, I'd sure want to run a seperate wps ticket on Little Mike..he's my favorite to win this race really..
