Either this Travers trainer thinks he's funny, or he's one of the worst ambassadors to horse racing in years. A quote from the trainer of the likely Travers pacesetter, Moreno. "He fits to run against these," Guillot said. "Can he win it? Possibly. Will he win it? Who knows? It's horse racing: four legs, a tail and somebody whipping his [butt]. I'll tell the rider, ride him like he owns him and the posse is chasing him. Hit him everywhere but the bottom of his feet, and if you can hit him there then hit him there too." Hard to believe this came out of a trainers mouth who's lucky enough to be running in the Travers with a decent horse.... imagine if he wins it? TJ

"People take this [stuff] too serious, to me it's a game, it's fun, said Guillot, a native of New Iberia, La., who spends most of the year in Southern California. "If I wanted a serious job I'd be a contractor. This is fun for me. Until someone comes from the other side and tells me it's better over there after this life, this one's going to be lived fun."
From the way he talks, he doesn't sound like he has an iota of empathy for the animals! Talking about beating the snot out of the horse and how fun the "game" is at the same time? Seriously???
No doubt his horse ran a courageous race....he really didn't have to hit him till the end and the rider did get after him pretty good. After his pre-race comments, he did look a bit foolish, but the horse made him look good. If he walks back some of his comments as flippant, he could be given some new opportunities and possibly be taken more serious by the press. He said all along this is a good horse and b's and gelding him was the ticket. TJ

It seems Moreno had a mouth abscess going into the Travers. The abscess popped Tuesday and he's expected to resume training at the end of the week at Belmont Park. TJ
