Steve Haskin's Top Ten Breeders Cup race

Postby ct2346 » Sun Oct 06, 2013 5:15 am

His list of Top Ten Breeder's Cup races is up on Blood Horse, along with accompanying video. Nice. But...

If you take it at face value - one conclusion is that nothing worth note has occurred in the last 20 years. The most recent entry in the list is from 1993. Don't know whether this is because we tend to elevate the events of our earlier years or whether there's really been a dearth of stars and exciting races. I would think that Zenyatta's classic could be included, but can't think of much beyond that.

Maybe we do lack stars.

I think they were only for the years 1984-93

oops. Well that sort of takes the wind out of the sails of the point.

But - anyway...I would think that Zenyatta would be the only addition...

I think Haskin means to do a top 10 of the next 10 years (94 to 03) and a top 10 of the next 10 years (04 to 12).
So, that would include our friend Zenyatta.
He would have to include wins from Cigar, Tiznow, Awesome Again, Inside Information, Goldikova, and even the DH in 03. Even Ouija Board?

Inside Information has to be the most dominating wins at the Breeders Cup. Wow.

I would have to still give that title to Arazi.

I still remember that first Breeders' Cup Classic !

Wild Again, Slew O' Gold and Gate Dancer battlin' it out to the wire, now that was a hoss' race and I think that one race made the Breeders' Cup the Breeders' Cup - what an inaugural.

Wild Again does it !

Arazi was definitely impressive, but his field wasn't as good as the Distaff of '95.

I just think Inside Information beat a helluva field that day. AND, the mares in that field have produced some fantastic foals:

Inside Information produced a champion in Smuggler.
Heavenly Prize produced Good Reward and Pure Prize.
Lakeway produced Sluice.
Serena's Song produced Grand Reward, Harlington, Serena's Tune, Sophisticat.
Mariah's Storm produced Giants Causeway.
Borodislew produced Canadian Frontier.
Vinista produced Roman Dynasty.

Serena's Song hopefully ends up as the 3rd dam of next year's Derby winner. That would rock!!!
