Stem Cell Therapy

Postby madelyn » Thu Jul 21, 2005 5:01 pm

There was a recent article in the Bloodhorse about a new stem cell therapy for tendon injuries, and I know of a horse that recently went from here to LSU for this therapy. It is a very interesting concept. I wonder where else in the US this therapy is being done?

madelyn - There was an article in our Texas Thoroughbred magazine's annual health issue last summer about stem cell therapy tests on the injured legs of race horses that showed truly 'amazing' results in a horse that had literally torn most of his hoof and a lot of skin off his foreleg, at least bruising, if not outright tearing, the tendons in doing so. The leg and foot heeled quite nicely, considering the degree of original trauma and very quickly to boot. I believe that the horse was able to return to training and racing, but can not be absolutley certain I'm remembeing it or imagining it. (the line becomes fuzzier as time goes by....<sigh>) The stem cell therapy in this case was being administered in a small scale test application done under a funded grant study at a university/vet college - either California or Coloradao as I recall....I'll dig around and see if I can find the issue and get you a copy of the article....meanwhile here is a link to that magazine

Hey ,
I know in Canada it is still experimental , but he early results look good. Actually our vet offered it to our standardbred race horse for freebecause it still is in the early to mid level of experiments. I thinkhe is doing it through a vet college. Unfortunately with every new treatment you take a risk about he result , but early indications say that it works well. We are thinking about doing it , but not too sure yet. any info anyone has would be helpful.
