I think they are ermine spots on the filly, but her mom has a larger black "oil spot" on her side, and mom's the one with the sarcoid. I'm not sure why I threw the info. on the filly in there... just proud of her I guess (she really is a looker!)
Anyway, since someone mentioned the melanistic cells in reference to black markings, I was wondering if anyone thought that there might be a connection between horses with the black marks (the "oil spot" type, not the ermine type) and succeptibility to cancerous cells... sort of like the relationship between gray horses and melanomas...
Color/marking questions

Jorge and xfactor: question about blue eyes and TBs. I know of 3 TBs w/ blue eyes and have heard of a couple others. As blue eyes does not tend to be a trait of sabino to my knowledge what DOES that mean? Possible frame or splash carrier?Of the blue eyed TBs one is black, 2 are chestnut. Have heard of a gray one....so no common denominator on color. Not much common pedigree (at least up front......didn't dig way back yet) on the 3 I know.
On the Bend Or/Oil slicks: one mare here to be bred has this (Cerene). She is also very rabicano. She has pots of them......kinda big Bend Or spots.

The gray horse is one someone else saw.No real details. One is a black stallion. One is a chestnut stallion. One is a chestnut mare. All have very wide facial white bordering on or actually are bald faces.I know the mare has very pale blue eyes. I seem to remember the black stallion had pale blue. The chestnut stallion: I'll have to dig up his pic later and look. The mare and the black stallion had a couple white stockings. Previous foals o/o the mare from chromeless TB stallions had a lot of facial white and tall stockings w/ jagged edges. (I have a 2 year lease deal on her
to cross on my colored TB colt hoping for a really wild colored baby!)

XFactor: I looked at pics of the 3 horses. In the case of the mare the white blaze comes to the inner corner of her eye, but does not go beyond that. In the case of the other 2 they have a normal blaze up top that fans out wider around the nose a good ways below eye level. I have an ALL white (maximal sabino) mare. Her eyes are brown. Her white dam is the same. My stallion's white sire has brown eyes. His white grandma and her white sister have brown eyes. Norsire Farm's 2 all white TBs have brown eyes. Given all the horses with all white faces and not a blue eye in the bunch I'm just not sure the white on the face accounts for the blue eyes. Jorge........you floating around anywhere to comment

Weird isn't it?
My guess is that there is some interation between the timing of the white and the development of the eye bud.
Think of the marking as 3 dimentional not just a surface mark. On horses with blue eyes related to white markings, there must be a signal to shut down the production of dark pigment in the eye and in the skin.
It may be that some cells are resistant to the command, and continue to produce pigment.
