Entering at Aqueduct for Sunday
We're entering Lei Diavalo (won MSW at Belmont 3 weeks ago) for a state bred A-other than this Sunday. As always, if we get in, I'll be the one in the hat.
Granted, it will be a much more subdued hat this time, given that it is the BigA, and winter, and directly under the takeoff pattern at JFK. Looking forward to shivering in that nice blustery paddock. If any of you aren't planning to be tied up in returning home holiday traffic by then, please stop by before post time and introduce yourself.
I got to watch it from sunny Seattle.
Looked like a good try for Lei Diavolo. A slightly slow start gave her too much to do and with a big field she had to go way wide, but she kept closing and got 4th.
The filly who laid down in the gate looked like she scrambled out of there okay. Scary situation.
Angel Dancer was in the race before, a statebred handicap, in somewhat over her head in a race without pace. Result was predictable. she nudged past one at the wire to get 5th....

Monicabee, the jockey story associated with today was a nightmare.
Joyce stayed in MD, and we literally didn't have a rider till the eleventh hour. The ride we got was unexceptional, as you saw. Our filly is incredibly laid back, and despite the gate antics of the favorite who was scratched after she flipped, and the airplanes banking low out of JFK, our gal basically napped through it all and got left behind at the start. She got run 5 wide most of the way too, and passed many horses in the stretch to get nicked in a photo.
She came out of it fine (so far), so we'll see.
I did see that 5th by Angel Dancer. Nice looker.
The only really decent part of our day was that the holiday traffic off Long Island was non-existent. Far better travel today than a non-holiday and regular Sunday, I must say.

Denise, walking into a race like that with no jockey must have been stressful. Diane Nelson is a competent rider, but of course having a jockey who knows the horse is a source of comfort.
Enjoy those NY bred conditions! Lei Diavolo looks like she can be competitive there. Angel Dancer will have to try her luck in claimers next, I think, as open company is just too stiff for her.
I can't believe there was no traffic heading back... that's one thing I don't miss - having cross Staten Island & paying to do it!

Thanks, Des
Des, I'm not sure the trainer will want to run her on the inner track up there at the BigA. It's very deep and sandy. If that's the case, she'll get a well-deserved rest, then come back (if all goes well) in '06.
She's an interesting filly. When she was a baby, she was a good breaker, but stopped running after a half. When she became 3, she started to understand how to rate herself better. Since she's by Abaginone, we haven't determined yet if she can really run longer than a mile, though her dam did and her bottom side is all distance and predominantly turf. She has had traffic problems in her last three races, and seemed to extricate herself to pass tiring horses, so that's a good sign.
One thing we do know is she is as laid back as can be! She slept in the receiving barn all day, and when she was in the spit barn after the race, the planes were as low and loud as ever, and she never even looked up.
A very gentle soul for a competitive race horse.
