I was wondering what was the deal with his lack of covers (in comparison to his brothers) and his being off the Walmac register. Did they mention what specifically was his problem?

He apparently would get completely out of control while covering mares. My mare went one morning and he went so berzerk that they couldn't cover her and she had to come back that afternoon. His fertility was supposedly low as well, but I was under the impression the attitude was the biggest issue.

Good luck to the new farm is in order I guess
From photos, I actually thought he was the nicer looking between ROTT and him.

It will be interesting to see if Sulamani does better at stud than his half brother, Dream Well. Dream Well had one hell of a race record and pedigree and was really touted as the guy who could be just as good as his sire at stud. He flopped.

I actually tried to sell Unforgettable Max last year for his owner and I can tell you he is one impressive looking animal. His conformation is impeccable and he raced sound until he retired. He was one of the few older horses that continued to get better with age and stayed incredibly sound his entire racing career. He was unfortunate to not get a grade 1 win but he raced honest and consistent his entire racing career. He is tough as nails and absolutely stunning to look at. I think an awful lot of Northern Afleet and if and when you see Unforgettable Max you will not be disappointed. He is a very good deal at 7,500. Physically, the two stallions are very similar but I think UM is definitely the better looking of the two. I think UM will be a great breed to race stallion. At 7,500 he may be a steal.

hi bcassidy

Your reference that Unforgettable Max is "...absolutely stunning to look at" and "his conformation is impeccable..." is what I've been told (by others that have scrutinized the two) I can expect to see.

My understanding is that Max is definitely the looker (of the two) when compared to his champion-to-be full-brother Afleet Alex.

Best to you.

Respectfully

I think it depends on what you are breeding FOR. If you are breeding for the sales and we will say you have a really nice mare that matches all these stallions well and has commercial appeal :D then I would breed to Alex. If you are breeding to race I would pick his proven sire unless you just have this gut feeling that your mare would suit Alex better. If you like the family but can't afford either of those THEN breed to Unforgettable Max. 8) Personally I was so impressed by Alex I would chance it and breed to him and hope that lightning strikes twice. he was very courageous and had an awesome turn of foot.

Bull Dog meets your requirement of a brother who was less successful on the track, but more successful at stud. Louis mentioned BD's race record and number of stakes winners. Compared to Sir Gallahad as a racer, Bull Dog was rated 15 to 20 pounds behind his form. In the stud, BD sired 15.2% stakes winners to SGIII's 11.5%.

Interestingly, these two full brothers sired very different types of runners.

In his book Sire Lines, Abram Hewitt wrote "How anyone could have known in advance that Bull Dog (given his indifferent racing record) would prove to be such a high-class sire of early maturity, high speed, and limited distance capacity, passes the understanding of this writer. None of the other sons of Plucky Leige showed that genetic character. Sir Gallahad sired middle-distance stock, and Admiral Drake and Bois Roussel each sired, on the whole, horses that matured late and were plodders."
