Thoughts on this cross

Postby sprucie » Thu Jan 26, 2006 6:04 am

Does this sound like a good cross?

Mr Livingston http://louroefarm.com/stallions/mr_livingston.html x Mean Of Queen http://www.sprucehillfarm.com/meanofqueen.html . The foal would be intended for a sale, but if I like it, I may end up keeping it and run it myself. It would be a NY bred foal.

The things I like about the cross are both had plenty of starts and showed soundness, they both have good conformation (from what I can see in his picture), the mare's G2 winning 1/2 sister is by a Northern Dancer son, and it is a Rasmussen cross with Pocahontas 5x5.

I couldn't tell you anything about Mr Livingston, but I do like El Prado very much.
However, when I looked at the mare's pedigree---it screams for a son of Unbridled. I know that isn't what you were asking to comment on, but I couldn't resist. The two stallions that I like on paper for the mare that stand in NY are, Wheelaway and Thunderello.
best regards Brendan

It is a very interesting cross, actually. The mare's half sister by Hurok, though, seems to indicate a need for more Hyperion and Princequillo. But you may be on the right track with a son of Fappiano.

I liked Wheelaway when I saw him, but I don't think he's worth $6000, and his 1st foals are now 2yo's. Too risky for me with an "unproven" broodmare. Thunderello is right around the corner from me, and when I saw him, I didn't think he'd be a good fit for this mare conformationally. She needs a bit longer of a neck. Are there any Fappiano/Unbridled sons standing that have proven their soundness? I really don't like having Mr P in a pedigree, and try to avoid it if I can.

Just glancing through NY stallions, what about Millennium Wind for your mare?

With just 7 starts, I'd be concerned about him passing along his unsoundness, and here is his conformation picture, http://www.highcliff.com/registry_image ... _wind.html . The mare herself is very slightly sickle hocked, so I think the foal would end up being possibly as bad as the sire in this case. :(

The only Fappiano sire in NY that is even somewhat interesting is AP Jet, and he had 36 starts, so seems to be sound. Any thoughts on that cross?

The other affordable Unbridled son that caught my eye is Unbridled Image, any thoughts on him? I, of course, really like Saarland and Eddington, but for this mare, I think they are too expensive.

The other possibility is taking this mare to Tiger Ridge. He'd be bringing 3 additional crosses of Princequillo via Somethingroyal, and it picks up the nick of Secretariat /Chieftain. Any other thoughts on that cross?
