This guy as a stallion prospect...

Postby adrienne » Sun Mar 26, 2006 7:16 pm

I am posting this for someone else from another board...

His name is Wicklow Highlands and all of his information is in the database. I haven't seen the APR for his dam though.

Image

He is 10 years old, 88 starts, retired with a bowed tendon.

Shammy Davis' sire was TEMPERENCE HILL. This guy is definitely a sentimental favorite for me. That being said, I don't think you can go wrong with him because as I remember TH was known for throwing sturdy jump race horses also. I'd have to look back, but one in particular was a big time winner. SAM SULLIVAN, I think. Interesting tail-female line for this boy. Don't quite know what to make of it. He has a couple of Blue Hens way back. I have a young winning filly whose 2nd dam was by TH. She was a producer of 6 all winners. Her dam has produced 2, both winners, one black type. You may recall that TH ended up as a stud in Thailand, where he died at a very late age. He was not fashionable enough for NA or Japan. As I remember, he was a 50 to 1 longshot when he won the Belmont Stakes finally accumulating over $1 million in earnings. I stand two AMERICAN CHANCE stallions privately. I support the idea of breeding to HTR line stallions for turf, distance, and jump, though someone indicated SAINT BALLADO was more a sprinter type. With the recent results of ROBERTO line colts ELECTROCUTIONIST and BRASS HAT, the previous Dubai win by CURE THE BLUES line CHANCE BY CHANCE, and a few others, standing a TH son might be a benefit to certain programs. SUNDAY SILENCE is looking very profitable, but that's a breeding level far exceeding anything I even capable of dreaming about. As for the return this fellow might offer, I haven't got a clue. If I had a strong winning mare with a balanced producing pedigree, and his conformation suited me, I'd breed to him.

It's a long and sordid tale (isn't it always?), but I recently found this guy as a sporthorse stallion prospect for a friend. In the meantime, we have decided to partner, most likely, and I have purchased him with the intention of her reimbursing me half the purchase price, once we get the details out of the way. This may prove to be more of a headache than it may be worth, as I am starting to feel that he MAY be a better candidate for race breeding, while at the same time, REALLY wanting for breeding for sport, as MOST of my mares are warmbloods. She want's to house him in her state, I in mine, possibly (I am in Illinois, and I feel the market for breedinf for race to be better here than in Missouri, correct me if I am wrong. It may not matter where he is, though).
He has not bred any mares, and he is coming 10. He had 98 starts, 25 wins, 16 2nd, and 13 3rd. Total earnings $628,803. He has been racing since 1998, so he is no slouch. He had a minor bow in, I think, 2001-2, and he then bowed again March 4th, his last race. It doesn't look to be much of a bow, but I know looks can be deceiving. The ULTIMATE goal is to heal him, and start him in retraining so he has another life after racing, regardless of status as a stallion. He deserves that chance, in my opinion.
I have more pictures of him if anyone would like to see them, and will have better ones once he is home in about a week or so. I have been on pins and needles, and this has to be, bar none, the biggest horse-related decision I have ever made. I have owned a number of thoroughbreds off the track, but I honestly have NO idea about the real nuts and bolts of the bloodlines and the business itself, before they are "done". I always have had the honor of getting after they are washed up! LOL!
Thank you to Adrienne for bringing this to this forum, where he may be looked at in an educated and critical light. I look forward to reading any responses or comments.

From his conformation he looks like he'd be suited for either race or sport so I'd market him to both crowds. You could take turns standing him in each other's state. Say 2 years in yours (since YOU bought him after all) then 2 years there, then back again. Is Missouri much of a state for racehorse breeding at all? If he didn't get enough of a response in MO then you'd have grounds (put it in the contract) to house him in IL. (or vice versa but that would be unlikely I think!)

That's a terrible picture! :D But he looks good even there and he certainly was TOUGH enough and had ability, he should be a good regional prospect I think.

Where the stallion stands is probably not consequential. IL has a lot to offer as far as tracks are concerned. The stud market is a bit more grim. It's been quite a while, but the last significant sire I remember in IL was SEATTLE MORN and I don't think he did at all well commericially. I think Summerhouse has a point about a two fold marketing program although I would not do it myself. Initially, I tried it and it was a headache because thoses interested in a stud for racing were thinking low quality if involved with sport horses. No offense to the Sport Horse community. It's a stupid interpretation of the market on their part. I gave up on both ideas and went private deciding to be a homebreeder and let the cards fall where they will. One last idea, if you do decide to use him as racing stud, do your homework on TH. although the number of foals in NA were limited, he had some nice ones. I mentioned SAM SULLIVAN and, of course, SHAMMY DAVIS, but SHAM FRANCISCO was another. Good luck, wherever you go with him.

Well, Wicklow has been here over a week now, and he's already settling in well. I took some better conformation pictures of him. They aren't great by any means, but they are better than the ones provided earlier. If anyone has thoughts let me know. I'd like to consider advertising him for a few approved mares, but it is getting later in the season for a lot of folks. He's been romancing one of my Trakehner mares for a few days now, so he definately knows he's ALL boy. Easy to handle, even for me, which is good. He moves beautifully, even with the fairly recent bow, so he will go through American Warmblood inspections in late June to start marketing him for the sporthorse diciplines. If he does well there, we'll move "up" to some of the other resistries, like ISR and ATA, I hope. He's a nice guy overall.

I'd take that bottom right off, it doesn't do a thing for him! :D

The bottom left is nice, too bad it wasn't more from the side. He's good looking guy, hope he does well in the inspections for you.

Thanks for the input. I had considered removing a couple of those pictures. As soon as the wind dies down, and he settles in a bit more, I'll take him over to the "conformation slab". Basically, we have a 8' x 15' slab of level concrete set into the grass that is against a backdrop of pine trees. It is the best place for good conformation photos, since you can get a true level shot, AND see the feet. These are just quickies that my friend took with a cheap disposable camera a couple of days after he arrived. They'll do until I can get him all prettied up. :D His mane is absolutely beastly thick and wavy. I am sure it is going to be a blast to work with. He is a typical irritated redhead when it comes to grooming. I can't imagine pulling that sucker, but it will eventually have to be done. Luckily, he also has a full, long tail to go along with it, even though it's in need of some work.
Thanks for looking, and I am more than happy to hear everyones thoughts.

PS, summerhorse, I looked at your site. My friend is a model horse artist. Maybe you know her? Her name is Tiffany (Hoffman) Purdy.

I think you have made a wonderful purchase, and I wish you all the best. I just wanted to comment on the dam of your new stallion. She is also very well bred. Her sire, Rampage stood here in Texas and was a very correct and handsome horse. I have a mare from Rampage who won on the track, and has produced two offspring that are doing very well as sport horses. One was exported to Canada, and the other is a three year old being trained as a future show jumper. They have very good temperments, and good size and bone. The three year old is currently measuring 17.1 and still growing. Keep us informed.

Hiya Joie,

Wicklow Highlands isn't a bad cross for Lucky Genia. It's an outcross through 4 generations and has some interesting line breeding especially through Rampage and Visionneuse. Just in case you were interested :)

Please keep us informed about him and the best of luck!

Regards,

Pete
