Raise a Native has dominated as a sire line
Raise a Native has dominated as a sire line in Derby winners which makes it difficult for them to be out of Raise A Native line mares or they would be inbred. Derby winners from the Raise a Native sire line include
Majestic Prince
Affirmed
Alysheba
Strike The Gold
Real Quiet
Grindstone
Unbridled
Fusaichi Pegasus
War Emblem
Smarty Jones
Funny Cide
Monarchos
Thunder Gulch
Genuine Risk

Barbaro will be attempting to do something that has not been done in 50 years - win the Derby despite not having raced in five or more weeks.

hi 3phase
Strong Contender (by Maria's Mon) has a lot of talent; he's made only two starts but won them both convincingly. His trainer John Ward shipped the colt from Florida to Turfway to run in the Lanes End, but he didn't get in due to lack of earnings. He lost an excellent Derby-prep opportunity there but is now scheduled to run next in the Bluegrass. If Strong Contender runs big there I expect he'll be Ky Derby bound.
All Things Considered, I guess it'd be fair to describe him as a longshot...but he has a lot of ability and just might get the job done.
SC's performance in the upcoming Bluegrass (and how he comes out of the race of course) should tell the story.

I'm a bit out to lunch on any of the other horses.

Strong Contender has to run big there to be Derby bound. Otherwise he won't have the graded stakes earnings to get in.
I think it's a shame that trainers aren't able to plan out a campaign that they think will suit their horses best. Instead, they need to win early and often or risk being shut out of even the Derby prep races. I wish SC had been able to run in the Lane's End and I hope he does well in the Bluegrass. I'd love to see him have a shot at the Derby.

Every time this comes up, someone throws that out. The "Jinx" is Broodmare Sireline, not second dam sireline. No one has said he's not been in the broodmare, just not showing up in the 'key position' of broodmare sireline.

Louis do you know anything about judging horseflesh?

eeeeeeeh ... just because Louis feels he's not of the same caliber as "1st string of Derby horses" doesn't meant he feels the horse isn't a good one and capable of winning. One does not equal the other.
And I agree with Louis .. I didn't see anything in B&J's win that made me think he could have run with Brother Derek today.
I also don't think Bro Derek is your Derby winner.
and Point Determined confuses me. The more I see him, the more he reminds me of Silver Charm only with all SC's quirks magnified. Big lazy SOB. I can't tell if he just didn't have it or if he just didn't want to give it.
zinn21 wrote:Sam, not only did Louis think Bob wasn't a first stringer, he thought the poor colt should stay in Cali to pick up easy money.. Now that's brilliant.
Well ... in this case, the 'easy money' relative to B&J's ability was in New York.
zinn21 wrote:As far as the Bro-he's a nice colt but he'll need a cab to get a mile and a quarter.
Agreed. He's not real high on my probable list of derby winners. Actually, he's not on the list at all.
edit blink You said Bro ... I read Bob ... feh.
Point Determined is ... he confuses me. I've learned to trust my instinct at this stage and horses that confuse me generally do well between now and August. Like I said, he reminds me of Silver Charm ... big, lazy SOB. His work right before the SA Derby and then his effort in the race just don't jell. He's going to get his game together and be a pain in someone's butt.
Barbaro is ... but he doesn't really 'feel' like a Derby winner to me.
Brother Derek is ... I'm still gathering my thoughts on him.
I've a few I'm looking at that should sneak in under the radar (should be going through the Lexington) and be a price. One ran yesterday .. definitely needed his race. Lost, but it was a dead game effort only losing by a head in the final strides in, I believe, his 2nd start of the year so he was short. If he gets into and comes out of the Lexington with a Derby berth, he's going to be the one. No, I'm not naming him publicly just yet. PM and ask nice, I might tell ya
My Derby pick is Lawyer Ron. He has thrived all spring after a series of tough races. He shows racing versatility and is training like a monster. His pedigree is is soft on stamina but his female family has thrown some high quality runners from time to time so I'll stick with the Lawyer to win the Derby.
