a filly! - UPDATE! She IS nursing! Pics added!

Equality X Surprise Audit Filly born at 4am today (the 14th.. )

up and on her feet in no time but not nursing (still isn't at 9pm Either!)
Vet was out.. said she isn't a dummy foal...
tube fed her and said to feed her every 2 hours..
So doing that .... ughhh and I have a 2 month old baby of my own! ughh!

the filly smells moms teats... (has her mouth open while doing this) and knocks them around with her nose but does not attempt to nurse :cry: Not sure if she ever will...

Everyone cross your fingers and pray for me...

Karie, can you get her to suck on your fingers? Maybe that'll help give her the right idea....I've seen it work before on a slow learner, the foal sucked milk off the vet's fingers, then he rubbed some milk on the mares' teats and guided the foal in the right direction.

nope... i wish.. anytime I touch her mouth she clamps it shut...
I think she thinks I am going to put the syringe of milk in it..

She was up and still wouldn't nurse.. until about midnight.. I syringe fed her all night (every 2 hours) and 2 am she was down (since 10pm) and finally got up- pooped and layed RIGHT back down. I tried to get her to nurse, but she just collapsed insted.
So the rest of the night I syringe fed her and watched her on the camera monitor (and cried). She never got back up. 10:30 am she arrived at Michigan State University Vet Clinic... She has pneumonia (70 degrees the night she was born..) and her glucose was VERY VERY low and of course she was dehydrated. They worked on her a couple hours and she looked to be doing a little better... so we left her there. They told us they will call if anything bad happens and said no news is good news. So.... I am hoping that they can get her back on her feet and that she somehow starts nursing..
When I hear something I will give you another update.

Newborns are sure fragile, aren't they? Hopefully she's just temporarily off due to the illness and will get better quickly now! :)

an update...
after we left she went "flat" again.. looked pretty bad..
They were ready to give up on her and the vet tried one last thing.. CAFFEINE!! she sent out someone to buy No Doze (or however its spelled ? No doz??) and it worked!! The filly is back up on her feet and getting up and laying down on her own. She still wont nurse but seems to be attempting to.. She was sucking on the dr's knee earlier..
So she is on the improve :D BUT isn't out of the woods yet... :cry:

I will keep you updated..

This is sort of off topic. Karie I'm very sorry to hear of your troubles.

This is just an observation from the few foals I have been involved with who simply couldn't nurse (they seem to search the mare from end to end, endlessly).... and every one had pneumonia, possibly (probably) from aspiration of fluids (amniotic?). The pneumonia must whack out the senses of smell and taste.

I hope your filly makes it. As henthorn said, they are SO fragile.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

She's Nursing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GREAT NEWS!!!!!! :D
Dr. Wilson just called about an hour ago and the filly is nursing!!!

She still has some issues.. like bacteria in her blood from being a septic foal and her IGG count is still rather flat... she has had plasma twice already.. Her white blood cell count is improving a lot though!!

So Its looking good.. IF she continues to nurse..
The next update will be tuesday morning..

Wonderful news about your filly. Thank you for posting your experience, because I think many of us have learned something from your reports. I look forward to the update tomorrow and wish you and the filly all the best. I too had a filly born on Easter morning, and could really identify with how you must be feeling. Thank goodness, mine passed her "well baby" exam today. Yet, I have another mare to foal, so you never know. Keeping my fingers crossed for good news tomorrow.
