Motion Approved is in tough

Postby henthorn » Wed Apr 26, 2006 8:42 pm

Today I received a Daily Racing Form e-mail regarding the oldest son of my mare Shake On It. His name is Motion Approved, by With Approval. He's five now, and I sold him before he ever began racing, for less than the expense of sale prep   . He's been gradually improving since he broke his maiden at four, running in allowance company at such tracks as Sunland, Remington, and Will Rogers Downs.

However, the owner has put him up for the Bosselman/Gus Fonner S. at 1 1/16mi on the dirt, on April 29th, with a $100,000 purse  ! He is in post position #7, race #9, set to leave the gate at 5:14pm CST.

I know nothing about Fonner Park, or about the competition. But I suspect he can be competitive in such a race. Wouldn't that be a shocker, if he were to become stakes-placed and/or win a big purse for his owners, and substantially improve the catalog page for mama and me? 8) :o :D

That would be the best of news and great fortune for you!! Let's hope it happens just like that!

I checked the past performances, and he's one of only three who's not been a stakes winner out of eight runners. But morning line has everybody at 10:1 or less odds. All have excuses why they might not handle this race, and rain is expected as well. Who knows?!

 :D  I was able to catch the race at Remington Park, though no one else was watching Fonner Park. The bartender was nice enough to help me tune it in. The race went off about 25 minutes late, perhaps because of an earlier rain. The track was listed as "good", which usually means it's drying out from a recent shower.

All eight horses raced, and as I predicted, there was a speed duel up front involving four horses. Motion Approved, who is a stalker, trailed them in fifth, and when the duel softened them up, the front-runners all dropped back. He briefly gained the lead and was passed by the second favorite, Wally's Choice, who is a closer. Here's the result:

PP_Horse___________ Finish________ Odds___WIN__PLACE__SHOW

6 Wally's Choice_____1st by 2 1/2____ 2.60____7.20___4.80___3.20
7 Motion Approved___ 2nd-4 3/4_____ 21.70_________13.80___4.80
8 Stormy Business____3rd-3_________5.20_________________3.80

He earned $20,000 for his efforts, bringing his record to
13__3__3__3___$59,394

Hi Henthorn,

Looking at the chart, Motion Approved might have been closer had he not been moved up, closing the gap into a very Fast :22.4 second quarter.

He's won sprinting, routing and been competitive on the grass.

Maybe his move was just a second to early, but who knows.

It was SO COOL. I enlisted anyone within shouting distance to root for my "grandson", and I was as nervous as if I were watching him from the rail. At first the camera was trained only on the leaders, so Motion wasn't in view. :? Then we started to see some of the pacesetters fall back, and here came the only gray horse in the race into the picture and quickly into fifth :) , fourth :D , third :o , second  , first  . As he reached the stretch, two closers were winding up from the rear  and came running. One passed him easily to win in the final strides  , and the other flattened out and dropped back  . So he only missed first place by 2 1/2 lengths and was 4 3/4 lengths ahead of the rest of the pack :D .

The fellow next to me had made a win/place bet and returned $13.80 for his $4 leap of faith. He was tickled for me and for him as well! :P

Hopefully he will stay well and continue to mature into a fine racehorse. He is an accredited OK-bred, and Remington Park is only five miles from my home. He is nominated to the Oklahoma Classics races and Breeders' Cup races, so hopefully he'll continue to produce for both his owner's connections and his breeder, ME!
