Tribulations! Stillborn filly!

Postby henthorn » Thu Apr 27, 2006 9:52 am

I was noting that so far the only one of my five mares that hasn't had foaling or pregnancy problems was Spanish Guitar, so I guess it's her turn.

Today I received the call that she delivered a stillborn filly 3 1/2 weeks early in New York. She tore pretty badly through her Caslick, (a procedure to keep the vagina cleaner during pregnancy until the final few weeks). The vet isn't sure that the placenta is fully delivered, so we have to watch for bleeding and infection; and she needed sutures and uterine flushing and antibiotics.

Apparently the baby had lost circulation from a twisted umbilical cord and died in utero.

Please pray for all concerned, that the horse, vet, and owner are blessed in the recovery effort. I sure would hate to lose Spanish, since she's certainly been a blessing to me.

Oh, Henthorn, that is so sad. I'm so very sorry. Man, it has really been a rough year for folks around here!!! Hope that she pulls through like a champ for you!

I received an update from Lois Engel at Pucker Ridge Farm in NY that Spanish Guitar is now doing well after her stillbirth. After additional uterine flushes, she passed the remainder of the placenta and then began to perk up and play about three days after delivery. She's got a sore bottom, but was witnessed playing with her head in the water trough for about half an hour just for fun, and entertaining the onlookers. Lois had taken an immediate like to Spanish, and vice versa. They are best buds now.

That's the best possible news. Glad to hear your mare is doing alright and apparently, no mental side effects!

Henthorn,

So sorry to hear of Spanish Guitar's troubles and of your still-born foal. (I still LOVE that mare's name.) It has sure been a terrible year for many of us.

I hope Spanish recovers well and has a very successful broodmare career ahead of her. Do you have plans to attempt to breed her this year, or wait this one out and try again early next year?

She wasn't even due until May 20 for the foal that died. It's still early, so she will be set up with Prime Timber when her sutured areas heal. The phenotypes are very similar, and the hypo-mating pedigree looks intriguing with both Hail to Reason and Best Turn descending from Turn To, and four total strains of Royal Charger. Also linebreeding to Native Dancer and Tom Fool.
