Best of the unraced sires?

Postby skeenan » Fri Jul 07, 2006 7:09 pm

This is a curiosity thing... and I tried searching before asking...

Which unraced stallions have been the most successful? And their most accomplished progeny?

I'm wondering how they've compared (in a general sense) to their raced counterparts in the breeding shed... I can research the currents, but hoping some of you remember some past stallions that may stand out...

Thanks for any replies! :D

I may stand corrected, but I believe the leading sire HIGH TIME was unraced. A product of the brilliant mind of Elizabeth Daingerfield, High Time was sired by ULTIMUS (2 x 2 Domino), and out of a Domino mare! Thus, 3-3 x 2 Domino.

According to the PQ database High Time won 1 of his 7 races.

I must admit, I don't trust much in the racing records given at the data base - many are wrong or not updated.

Some good regional sires were unraced like Staff Writer, Bold Badgett and the recently deceased Slewdledo.

That is correct. He raced six times at two, his only win coming in a stake, and was retired due to a throat infection after his first 3-yer-old start. :)

Slewacide was a pretty good regional sire and had maybe 1 race.

Hmmm... the most common theme seems to be "good regional sire"...

Any theories as to why the unraced counterparts, regardless of pedigree, also seem to do poorly in the breeding shed...? I'm thinking of those who may have had an early injury or something similar... I wouldn't think DNA would be tied to physical success on the track...?

Interesting...
