Yes, that would be dark bay. Black is no brown hairs anywhere on the entire body, including muzzle, flanks, stifle, etc.

Dark Bay is also described as a brown horse. It is abbreviated in the form, dk by or br.

True black is actually fairly rare.

Good news! Out of Ashes and Derby Day Hope both won their races today. Both are registered as black.

What about Unconcerned? He's probably reg. as brown but never got a good enough look at him to see if he was as black as he looked from a distance.

Here's a pretty black one. Don't know how he is registered or if he raced or not: http://www.equinenow.com/horse-ad-25525

Last weekend Songster won the Woody Stephens on the Preakness undecard. I was screaming like a banshee as he ran down the stretch.

This weekend Internet Boy, runs. I checked and he is registered black:

I have a picture from TB Times of the dam of Folklore and she sure looks black. I don't even know her name!

Come Summer

Postby fdf » Wed Jun 21, 2006 7:42 pm

Black seems pretty rare indeed...I say the picture of Come Summer and he is listed as dkb/br. looks pretty much black to me in the picture. Oh well I will keep looking.

In Come Summer's case, he's definitely dark bay - if you look close at his flanks and face, you can see lighter brown patches. A true black wouldn't have those. :)

Dragging up an old thread, but anyway...

I think the owner of this one is on this forum, but I wish he was mine so I'll add him...

And I saw this one on CANTER and he's registered as black, but looks dark bay to me, and though his nose seems to be black, the rest of him isn't:

Think he's just sunburned? Isn't there something called 'fading black'?

Lonhro

Postby arganaut » Mon Jul 17, 2006 6:08 pm

A champion race horse in Australia and now sire, is Lonhro.

A complete mystery here is at birth he was called brown and all that is needed is a few hairs behind one of the ears.

But as he grew older and as this link will show, you will understand why he became known as 'The Black Flash'!

Black mare

Gypsy Prayer is black including nose and flanks. I think she's registered as dk b/br but she's definitely a black and had a black colt named Lucius Maximus, if I remember him correctly.

Black Horses

Postby arganaut » Sat Jul 22, 2006 12:40 am

Considered one of Australia's greatest ever Champions and possibly the greatest of the Modern Era, was a gelding called Kingston Town.

He was black, born in 1976.

He was the first horse in Australia to win a $1m and only horse to win three W.S. Cox Plates, run at weight-for-age over 2040m at Moonee Valley in October. He was also just beaten in a Melbourne Cup.

His career record was -

41 starts
30 wins
5 seconds
2 thirds
$1,605,790
