Young Gelding with Streptococcus Zooepidemicus

Postby mrequine » Thu Aug 31, 2006 5:22 am

Hi, I have a 3 year old gelding who has Streptococcus Zooepidemicus
has any one out there heard of this and /or had a throughbred with this problem? If so how long does it take to cure and how much training time will he loose? Do they come back to there normal selves?
Whatever you have on this I would appreciate.
Thanks John.

Well without details this is what Merck says, " ...with early recognition and appropriate treatment, recovery can be expected in >50% of horses with parapneumonic pleural effusion; return to comprrable levels of activity occurs in~50% of the survivors. In those horses in which the disease persists in an active form for > than 2 weeks, prognosis is garded at best, and successful treatment often requires manual removal of accumulated fibrin and necrotic lung. Prognosis si gaurded to poor for those with pleural effusion secondaey to neoplasia or esopheal rupture." So sounds preety rotten to me without much info on when you caught it and how long it's been going on. I'm verry sorry, best of luck.

MR Equine,

Is this your Hyperarhythmia Horse diagnosed with this or is a bad day just getting worse?

Hi, Yes this is the same horse that I had posted the Hyperarhythmia problem after many tests and lots of dollars spent at a well known horse facility he was diagnosed with an infection in his lower respiratory system.
So lets hope and prey this has been the problem all along that has made him stop during his workouts and come back blowing heavy and causing his heart rate to increase after completing his short workouts on the track.
Best always John.
