I'm glad somebody brought him up. I some his picture somewhere and he was freakishley black, meaning there was no mistaking his true color.

Okay, I have one for the colour experts ...

Explain this to me. Krissin Angel (Kissin Kris out of a Gold Alert mare) is registered black ... and is out of a chestnut mare who is herself by a chessie stallion and out of a chessie mare.

Unless I'm missing something, that doesn't seem possible.

(she won the 2nd at Columbus today, BTW)

Recessive genes Sam :D Honestly, I don't know how two chestnut horses can produce a black horse. Genetics are bizarre...I have cousins who are blond and blue eyed and then one that has jet black hair and deep brown eyes. My older sister has olive tone skin while I'm pale and easily sunburned. Go figure...

well yeah, I know that, but I thought you had to be EE to get black and you can't get EE from a dark bay sire and chestnut dam (especially when the dam is from two chestnut parents).

I is so confusseled.

Igor won today at Del Mar in a 1 mile dirt claiming. Time was slow, 1:39.62, but he extended his record to 34 (6-6-6) $69,773

To be true black you have to be aaEE or aaEe, since E is dominant to e. Krissin Angel got e from mom, but her copy of E from dad allows her to produce black pigment.

The real kicker is the a allele. It's rarity in the TB gene pool is the reason why there are so few blacks.

Gotcha. Thanks, Nerd. I thought you were only true black at EE. I know KKris is homozygous for the E (10 crops and not a single chestnut, not even the greys) so I suspect he has more blacks than the three that are actually registered black. Most of his dk.B. are DARK and look black, but since the JC is so adamant about not registering black without loads of documentation, I suspect Mr. Franks registered them bay so he wouldn't have to deal with it.

Black is sneaky. Black can fade to look like brown and brown can be dark enough to look like black. The only way to know for sure is to test.
Sounds like a case for GENETIC TESTING MAN!!!!!!!!!!

IMO the JC needs to get with the 21st century and make color determinations based on that (oh right but first they'd have to admit that certain colors even exist and... well... never mind)

So long as a black based horse (black, bay, brown etc) doesn't inherit the agouti gene even if it is carrying the red gene it will be black in appearance. Two chesnut will never have offspring that are anything but chestnut. If anything else pops up somebody isn't a chesnut.

Here's one to keep an eye on. He's by a gray though so have to check back and make sure he's not a late grayer but I don't see any sign of it here but the photo is dark.
