Sharper Edge is going today (11/5/06) in the G3 Bay Meadows Derby, 9 furlongs on the grass. He's in very tough here. First time on the turf, but I think he will take to it. 20-1 morning line, so the odds maker doesn't give him much of a chance. Pretty good though for a horse that is out of a $1000 mare (that I located in someone's back yard) created by a match to a $1000 stud. At least he has had an opportunity to run against some pretty good ones. Bobby Frankel's German bred will be awfully hard to beat. Keep your fingers crossed that "Stoney" comes out of the race all right, and puts in a good effort.

He ran up close to the pace this time, which isn't the best way to run him. He does best by relaxing early, and making one good long stretch run. The jock pushed him early and he faded to finish last, by about 12 lengths. He was over his head in this one.

I had been wondering what Sharper Edge was going to be doing next. That was a very ambitious entry. Did the jock not follow instructions or did the race traffic just not allow for the ideal trip? I'm not sure if you mentioned how old Sharper Edge is, but if I recollect correctly he is by Snowbound and there has been some discussion that Snowbounds mature late. Anyway I'm sure you learned important things from the race and I hope that Sharper Edge came out of the race ok.

Sharper Edge is a 3yo. I don't know if Ricky Frazier had insructions to lay closer or not, but in all of Stoney's better races he has come from well off the pace. I think this was a little ambitious for him too. He is a very big boy, and I think he will be better as he matures.
