gammys babies

Postby Michelle Downs » Thu Oct 05, 2006 2:27 pm

hi you don't know me and I am no one special but I am writing this in regards to gammys babies. See I had there mother Gammy's Girl and I made a promise to her before she died. please bear with me while I explain. in 2002 i was on equine.com just looking at horses i never knew that much about thoroughbreds my interest was always quarter horses and drafts.anyhow I read an advertisement for a free thoroughbred that touched me and I was interested so I called. I found out that they had 24 hours to find her a new home or she would go to the slaughter. I couldn't let that happen I told them i would take her but it would take me a week to arrange transportation, to my 3 acre farm. they agreed and a week later this mare showed up that was skin and bones, head dragging on the ground and she couldn't lift her head. the driver said these are for you, it was all her papers. I looked at them wondering what i was supposed to do with this. so I stuck it into a file. I bought gammy a blanket and muscle builders, mare suppliments, wormer, thrush medicine (she had it in all four feet), she still seemed depressed so I read through her paperwork found out she had just lost twins, being a mother I thought maybe alittle company would do her some good. That friday I went to the local horse sale and bought a filly (yearling) looked just like Gammy and it worked, she got better. then on september 23, 2006 she got down and couldn't get up. I called the vet and by the time she showed up ( the next morning) the vet said that “Gammy’s spirit is willing but her old body just can’t we could prolong her life by a day or 2 but we will be making the same choice again”. I told her to put her down, she already had a hard enough life no sense me making it worse. I want her to leave this world in peace not in paine so I told Gammy that I loved her and I would try to find her babies and make sure none of them shared the fate she almost had. I never bred her nor harvested her eggs. alot of people said “you can make alot of money”. I told them I took her to give her a family of her own before she died and a family does not do that to one another.
so to make a long story short we buried Gammy out in the field she loved and I am going to keep my word and offer a good home to any of her babies that need a retirement home. so please let me know if there is any of them that need one, I can not afford much but I will provide them a family and home (they can call their own) for their remaining days.
thanks Michelle
