Wheaton died

He apparently broke his hip the morning of the farm's open house, according to a poster on another forum. They sent him to New Bolton and he was put down yesterday.

We were at the stallion show. He apparently got cast overnight. I felt for the owners -- they obviously cared about the horses & had to do the show despite worrying about him.

R.I.P. Wheaton.

Just curious: what forum was it?

Hi Nessa --

You are the 2nd person to ask me about Will's Way -- a friend went along specifically to look at him. He looked good -- I like his bloodlines & conformation, balance. Still, none looked as good to me as Lite The Fuse -- who wasn't even on my radar screen before the showing.

Storm Cat's half brother Wheaton dies at 16

Wheaton, a Pennsylvania sire and half brother to Storm Cat, died on Monday after a stall accident at Pin Oak Lane Farm in New Freedom. He was 16.

Wheaton broke his left femur, said Ric Waldman of Overbrook Farm, which bred and owned the Alydar horse out of Grade 2 winner Terlingua, by Secretariat.

The sire of graded stakes winners Santana Springs and Radical Riley, Wheaton stood two seasons at Pin Oak Lane after a nine-year stint at Sez Who Thoroughbreds in Ocala. His fee was $3,500 in 2006.

In eight crops of racing age, Wheaton has sired 11 stakes winners among 188 winners from 240 starters who earned $11,199,236 through Sunday. Santana Strings won the 2005 Amsterdam Stakes (G2) and Radical Riley won the '00 What a Pleasure (G3) and '01 Holy Bull (G3) Stakes.

Bred in Kentucky, Wheaton won one of 11 career starts.—Jeff Lowe
