Benchmark as a Turf Sire

Postby Alchemist » Sat Nov 25, 2006 10:36 am

What are people's opinions of Benchmark as a Turf Sire. Any opinions on what we can expect from Brother Derek today?

It would depend a lot on the mares bred to him, but, in my opinion, he has the right conduit mare profile to be a better than average turf sire.

Benchmark as Turf Sire

As stated by Bill it would depend on the mare bred to Benchmark.

Benchmark is currently ranked 12th in California (as of 25 Nov 06) by Turf earnings with 39 turf starters from 98 starters and (4) turf winners (10% from turf starters). The leading turf earner, Red Wagon $66,365(o/o T.V. LARK line mare) accounts for 24% of total turf earnings of $275,452.

Definitely would not be an endorsement If I were seeking a turf sire at a 10K fee, despite the fact that he is out of Danzig mare. You would think that the Alydar line with Sweeth Tooth, Plum Cake, & Real Delight (All Reines de course) that would be an overwhelming influence.

Benchmark's brother, Fruitition (Woodman o/o Winters Love by Danzig) has done better as turf sire with fewer opportunities and is ranked 20th by SPI in the Western Region for turf runners, 28th in Ca. by SPI, & 42nd in earnings in Ca. with 6 turf starters and 1 winner, Bonfante $96,250.

Western Region Turf Sires; Fruition is ranked 20th w/9starters - Benchmark is rank 50th w/41 starters. Benchmarks turf earnings of $275,452 account for just shy of 9% of the $3,081,340 earnings thus far this year, yet the turf starters account for approximately 40% of total starters. Benchmark is a dyed in the wool dirt sire imo. Look elsewhere for a high quality turf sire at 10K.

Benchmark is a very good turf sire despite what stats show. His offspring tend to improve on turf, thus many trainers run them on the turf, often as maidens. Brother Derek shoud also improve and possibly prolong his career. Aldar himself was a poor turf sire and a poor grandsire of sires. Ironically, the few decent sires from his line are turfers: Turkoman, Wheaton, Benchmark, and Talinum
