Indy Mood

Postby Roguelet » Thu Nov 30, 2006 7:46 am

For anyone who might be interested, we are changing Indy Mood's stud fee this year from "Private" to:

$1000 S/N or $850 due October 1, 2007
Special consideration for approved mares
Early booking and multiple mare discounts available

This has been a good year for Indy Mood; his 2006 stats include 50% winners from starters (20 starters, 10 winners), progeny earnings of over $160,000 in 2006, and two blacktype horses.

There is a good chance that slots will pass in Indiana this year (not guaranteed by any means, but this year offers the best chance we've ever had, and we were SO close last year that people are very optimistic about the chances this year.) We're trying to get some good Indy Mood babies on the ground so they will be ready when our purses go sky-high in Indiana. He's a registered Indiana stallion, so any of his babies (foaled in Indiana) will be eligible for all Indiana bred AND sired purse money. We're also in the process of trying to increase incentives and awards for sired vs. bred horses in Indiana (another no guarantee project, but there's a ton of support behind it) so that's another incentive to breed to a registered Indiana sire for future purse money.

Here's a direct link to Indy Mood's page on our web site: http://www.atalanta-acres.com/IndyMoodpage.html It includes a nice write-up by Bill Lathrop about his bloodlines. (Thanks, Bill!) :)

Oh, and to address the "show-stopper" for many people who see his race record of "unplaced in one start," he IS totally sound. He was bandage bowed by a groom before his first race, totally 100% human error and no fault of his own. He has good bone and great conformation.

Hi Roguelet,

For novices here . . . myself included, what does "bandage bowed" exactly mean.

Thank you,
T

It means that somebody wrapped a leg bandage incorrectly on him when he was in training, which put too much pressure on the tendon and caused the bow.

I was "shadowing" a trainer a few years back, and he told me that he would never under any circumstances let his help wrap the horses' legs. That was one thing he insisted on doing himself. Apparently he'd had the same experience with one of his horses and never wanted to have that repeated.

Here's an excerpt from an online vet article I found:

I've also had to treat several "bandage bows." The term bandage bow means that the superficial flexor tendon - a crucial structure for limb function - has been damaged by a bandage that was too tight, thus cutting off circulation and creating structural damage.

There are several ways this can happen: a lack of consistent quality padding under the final wrap; the bandage slipping down like an old sock and thus becoming a constricting band; a bandage that's applied too tight; and a bandage that takes on water and thus swells to become too tight. We often see this latter problem when disposable diapers are used as the padding.

I recall a bandage bow years ago at a racetrack in which the duct tape application had slipped, becoming a tourniquet of sorts and literally cutting through the superficial flexor tendon.

Hi

Indy Mood is a prime example of why you can't make assumptions as to a horses soundness by simply looking at a race record. Nothing takes the place of an on-hand, in person evaluation either by yourself, or by someone you trust who is well versed in assessing conformation. Indy Mood gets early winners, and they seem to get better as they mature. He's a good value (IMO).

Thank you, Bill, for the kind words. I absolutely hate to hear someone say that they would never breed to an unraced stallion because he's unsound... drives me nuts. There are so many reasons a stallion can be unraced or lightly raced, only one of those reasons is unsoundness. I wish more people would bypass statistics and look at the actual, flesh and blood horse... especially when looking at a breed to race stallion.

And you're welcome, T. :)
