Why is it that so many fillies and mares have names containing Lady, Princess, Girl, Sweet Lady and/or girl, Mama, Baby, etc?
Is it such a remarkable thing that they are one of TWO possible sexes?
You don't see Prince, King, Boy, etc nearly as much.
Is this horse sexism?

It might be perception. I haven't finished looking at everything but just typing in "King" in the Jockey Club online registry brings up a heck of a lot of names that start with the word. I'm sure Prince will also involve page after page of horses with the name and this is just ones that are taken in a certain timeframe where they're protected by the Jockey Club (many of the ones I noticed seem to be from 2000 on in fact).
Princess, Lady, etc sounds regal so anything including that in the Sport of Kings makes people feel special. I don't think it's sexism, it's an attempt to sound elite and noble. Even "Miss" is an old fashioned sounding title of some sort and in that case allows for some play on words with the mis- prefix.

Maybe the Girly names are more from current times and the Prince/King type names are more from the past.

I owned a horse named Miss Peachblossom (out of Miss Pear Blossom, half sister to Miss Apple Blossom). I looked her up in the Names Book (pre-computer days!), and there were pages and pages of Miss names.

I think your perception is correct . . . . . . in that there are a lot more fillies and mares racing than colts, horses and geldings. So you would see more "girly names".

Just personally, it's much easier for me to call a filly "princess" or "little lady" or "missy" than it is to use those words' masculine counterparts for the colts. My pet names for the fillies include "princess girl," "honey girl," etc. Pet names for the colts? Pretty much just "little boy" or "mister."

I guess girlie names are more prevalent - looking at the sales book this week there are alot of them! Tons of names that suck too - wonder what folks were thinking? Anyhow - loved the names you guys call your horses - HA! My mares periodically are called b*tches and rightly so! And yes - the whole get off my foot too has been used!
The babies tend to just be called "peanut" although we were calling them by their sires name - which confused the heck out of the vet - he didn't know which foal he was seeing since he used the whole mare name then the year after it.
Haven't named any of my foals yet - thinking folks will want to do that themselves but we do call the Tapit filly out of McCaskill "McTapit" - that's not too girlie is it
