Well, I finally bought my first broodmare at the Barretts January Mixed Sale. She was Hip #541, Gloriousexcitement, in foal to Ministers Wild Cat. She was one of my top choices (in my price range) and was able to be patient enough to land her at what I think is a reasonable price. Very excited!!!
Now I have the fun task of trying to figure out who to breed her back to. Before that, does anyone have any thoughts on her pedigree? I like Honour and Glory as a stallion, but I am not quite sure how he'll do as a broodmare sire. Her female line intrigues me. Her dam was undefeated in several starts and seemed to have a promising race career - she also has a nice produce record. She has ties to the Halo line, and tracing the female line down, even ties to Buckpasser and Nearctic. She is also an outcross to Storm Cat and Mr. Prospector lines, which is quite unusual nowadays. Any thoughts?
Now back to mating advice... Does anyone have any suggestions on CA stallions to breed her back to? I am mostly interested in breeding to sell, and would like to stay in the $5K range, but could go up to $10K. I like a number of stallions including Ministers Wild Cat (who she was bred to last year), Marino Marini, Memo, Storm Creek, and Formal Gold to name a few. Swiss Yodeler also seems to have the most commercial appeal. The cross to Marino Marini would provide some inbreeding to Relaunch and Halo, which I am not sure if it's good or bad.
Any advice would be appreciated!!! Thanks.

Relaunch x slew is a strong cross aside from the Tiznow fame. Also Storm Cat x Relaunch is also a very good cross.
I also like the cross with Formal Gold (very good breeding value at 5K) since he's a very solid & proven sire in that range & the cross will include; Buckpasser 5s x 5d, The Axe 5S x 5d, and 9 crosses to Mahmoud.
You could also inbreed to In Reality by various sires, such as Valid Wager & Kelly Kip so long as back at the knees is not present on the horses being bred. Inbreeding to In reality is very productive if this trait is not present.
Since your mare is unproven I would lean towards a proven sire that offers commercial appeal, with a reliable cross.

If you're in the area the CTBA is doing a local Stallion Tour next week - here is a copy of an email from LeighAnn - you might want to go and just hear what everyone has to say.
<<<Hi Everyone:
The San Diego County CTBA Stallion Tour on Feb 3 did not have enough sign ups to warrant booking a big bus...the cost was $1200. So, rather than cancel the whole thing I'm hoping to do a car caravan.
We will start at San Luis Rey Downs at 8am...many of us are going to meet there earlier and have breakfast and get a mini tour of the Downs...then hit the road to the farms. We plan to stop in Santa Isabel (sp?) for lunch.
Please email back to me if any of you want to tag along....this will be fun and also educational. I do have to look at several of the stallions on the farms and I know others on this email list need to check out some of the stallions too, so, whether it is one car or forty, the trip it on!
We will be visiting Vessels, Valley Creek Farm, Irish Oaks, Ballena Vista and E.A. Ranch.

You are welcome to visit my website. If you click on the links, I have a few articles up and some tips that may help you in TB breeding. Also, you may enjoy visiting the Gallery Of Greats.
Don't forget to click on Hi Teck Man's link and go to the Bloodhorse article to read about what that little stud did. It will encourage you to believe that reaching your goals is possible, even for smaller breeders. Have fun with your mare. Congratulations!
