Just got a call from the Farm that my mare aborted her foal. She was due to foal in April. She was carrying a filly. Very sad day...

So sorry, Des. I'm gun-shy every spring, as slips, abortions, stillborns, and accidents have claimed one or more a year for me also-- out of only five mares. Currently only three are expecting, so hopefully they'll all be okay. I feel for you!

So sorry for you Des. We lost one back in November, so I can empathize. It's heartbreaking. Hope the mare is alright and can try again. Hugs and prayers.

I"m so sorry to hear that. I was hoping 2007 would be a better year for everyone, but it's not starting out very well...

Thanks for all the support. I just spoke to the vet and she said that the mare still retained some of her Placenta, therefore she needs to be treated aggressively to get rid of it. I told her we will look at whatever it takes to take care of my girl I will do my best for her. She's dear to my heart.

Oh Des, I am so sorry. It's such a tough business. It can be so wonderful and on the other hand so heartbreaking.

Des, so sorry to hear about the filly - how sad. Hopefully the mare will expell the rest of the placenta and will be okay! Will you do a necropsy to see if they can determine the cause? When my mare slipped we went ahead and sent it off just because we wanted to know if it was something we did or if there was something on our farm that had caused it. It was one of those generic "can't tell" things but at least we felt better that it wasn't some grass or something on our farm. Hugs to you! Unfortunately alot of us know how you feel.
