Today's Bloodhorse Now reports that the nationwide ban on anabolic steroids for race horses and sale horses is inching toward becoming a reality.

I imagine it will start with post race testing, as they do now for other substances. They are saying that the clearance time is 30-60 days. But I think they have that wrong! I have had OTTB's come in showing full blown 'roid rage and take upwards of SIX MONTHS for it to wear off.

According to experts in human sports endeavors the tests can and are routinely "beat" if one knows the ins and outs of such surrounding the various steriods. Also, I'm not up on all the intricacies of HGH but my understanding is that it is VERY difficult to detect.
It's good that racing is working toward eliminating cheating etc. but the cheaters just keep moving the goal posts in order to stay "a hop ahead".

Very high 'roids (testosterone-type) will make a horse VERY MUCH more agressive. They are definitely performance enhancing. They can have the result of making the horse so aggressive he/she will "run through the pain." It is not just bulk and muscle, it is a temperament modifier. Equipoise is worse than Winstrol for making a horse, even a mare!, act totally studdish and very, very aggressive. Hence, the term Roid Rage. It won't make a horse faster unless you count the added muscle, but it will make a horse much more aggressive and, sometimes, competitive.

Would it also make them ignore pain causing breakdowns? Just curious..
That is certainly my theory.
Case in point, I have a mare who came off the track with, not one, but TWO broken knees, and so loaded up on Equipoise it took SIX MONTHS for her to stop attacking everything in sight and finally start to come into heat. No doubt the 'roids were to help her "run past a sore knee."

Knew it was too good to be true. From the Aug 23rd article I found:
Article is here: http://www.bloodhorse.com/articleindex/ ... p?id=40398
There is a nationwide push for the regulation of four commonly used steroids approved for use by the Federal Drug Administration: boldenone (Equipoise), stanozolol (Winstrol), nandrolone (Durabolin), and testosterone. All other steroids would be banned.

I think all weanling, yearlings and 2yos should be tested prior to sale and bad tests void the sale.
I agree 100%
With regards to steroid use in sales horses - doesn't word get around to prospective buyers about "suspect" owners and agents? If so [B WHY [/B]do people continue to support these "suspect" individuals?!
